Follow-up Activities - Open Source Systems Workshop, Kabul 15-17, 2012
- Training Sessions – in English - for IT Administrators -
Because of the interest the workshop got from the side of the Afghan participants - and the still
poor knowledge about Open Source software in Afghanistan two training sessions for skilled sys-
tem administrators (one introductory and one more advanced session) are planned in
Kabul/Afghanistan.
The first training session will provide an introduction into the Open Source software world (distribu-
tions, applications, server components etc.) and provide in depth hands-on training (Ubuntu 12.04,
Ubuntu/CentOS server set-up, Virtualization). At the same time, it will prepare the ground for the
subsequent and more advanced training session for the same participants.
First training session (introductory - in-depth end-user training)
Date Dec. 18-20, 2012
Location PC lab
Objective Participants will be enabled to set-up and use a Linux system (advanced
end-user level incl. VirtualBox/VMware Workstation, remote access functions
etc.) and to set-up a Linux server (e.g., simple database or mail server). This
training session will prepare participants for the more advanced 2nd training.
Participants 12-15 from public institutions in Kabul
Type of trainees IT managers or skilled administrators
Required skills - in-depth IT knowledge is required (end-user and administrator's level)
- good command of English is compulsory

Materials CDs/DVDs with the latest OSS releases and documentation (soft copies and
hard copies) will be distributed to the participants , LifeBoot USB sticks
Requirements PC workstation for each participant plus working Internet connection for all
PCs - one pre-configured mini-server for exercises

2. Second training session
Date Feb. 2-4, 2013
Location PC lab
Objective Participants will be enabled to set-up all components required to run a small
network of workstations (mixed Linux/Windows environment using virtualized
server hardware). Systems to be discussed will include LDAP, DHCP, DNS
etc.
Participants 12-15 from public institutions in Kabul who have completed the introductory
session in December 2012.
Type of trainees IT managers or skilled administrators
Required skills - in-depth IT knowledge is required (end-user and administrator's level)
- good command of English is compulsory
- participants must have participated in first training session
