Mars has two small moons called Phobos and Deimos. It has icy poles and channels that may have once held life. Temperatures average around -83C but can reach a high of 20C and a low of -140C. The surface is characterized by debris, rocks, boulders, canyons, inactive volcanoes, and red dust. The northern hemisphere is smoother due to repeated lava flows. Mars weighs 6.4185x1023 kg and has a diameter of 6800 km.

The universe contains millions of galaxies, including the Milky Way galaxy that contains our solar system. Our solar system is centered around the sun, which is made up of hot gases. It contains layers including the photosphere and chromosphere. The solar system also contains 8 planets that can be divided into terrestrial and gas planets. The terrestrial planets are closer to the sun and include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars while the gas planets farther out include Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The solar system also contains asteroids, meteors, comets, and other minor members.
- An asteroid impact likely caused the mass extinction that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Evidence for this comes from a thin global layer containing the rare element iridium found above the last dinosaur fossils.
- In 1994, comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke apart and collided with Jupiter, providing a dramatic example of a major impact event. Several black scars were left on Jupiter's atmosphere.
- While impacts from asteroids and comets are rare, the threat is real as shown by impacts to Jupiter. Near-Earth objects occasionally collide with Earth with potentially catastrophic effects.
Exoplanets are planets that orbit stars other than our sun. The Kepler space telescope discovered thousands of exoplanets since 2009. The first confirmed exoplanet, 51 Pegasi b, was discovered in 1995 orbiting a star similar to our sun. It is a gas giant that orbits very closely, allowing its orbit to be easily detected. Future missions like TESS, launching in 2018, aim to discover Earth-like exoplanets to search for life elsewhere. Direct imaging techniques are also being used to image exoplanets rather than detecting them through their star's wobble. Thousands of exoplanets have been found, but most so far are gas or ice giants, though some rocky planets exist, leaving the possibility of life unknown.

Miként válik a tudományos fantasztikum fantasztikus tudománnyá? Igaza volt-e George Lucasnak? Az előadásból ezekre a kérdésekre is választ kapunk.
BpSM 2013.12.
2. A NAPRENDSZER
Naprendszerünk a Tejút galaxis peremén
helyezkedik el. Középpontjában a Nap áll,
mely körül a bolygók keringenek. A
bolygók között számos üstökös,
aszteroida és kisbolygó is kering. A
bolygókon túl hatalmas, törmelékből álló
felhő található.
Sok planétának van holdja, gyűrűje.
Minden égitest kölcsönhatásban áll a
másikakkal és a Nappal. E hatalmas
rendszer felfedezése, hála az
űrszondáknak, mára felgyorsult. Egyre
jobban kezdjük megismerni ezt a csodás
világot. Persze nem csak a mi csillagunk
körül vannak bolygók. Sok csillag mellett
találtak már más planétákat.
3. A NAPRENDSZER FELÉPÍTÉSE
Nap, Merkúr, Vénusz, Föld, Mars, Kisbolygó öv,
Jupiter, Szaturnusz, Uránusz, Neptunusz, Plútó
és egyéb törpebolygók, Kuiper-objektumok és
Oort-felhő
5. A BELSŐ BOLYGÓK
• Pályájuk a Jupiteren belül
helyezkedik el
• Kőzetbolygók
• Kisebb az átmérőjük a külső
bolygókénál
• Felszínük szilárd
• Tengelyforgásuk viszonylag lassú
• Közéjük tartozik Földünk is
• A belső bolygók: Merkúr, Vénusz,
Föld, Mars
10. A BELSŐ
BOLYGÓK
FELFEDEZ-
ÉSE
• Már az ókorban is ismerték őket
• Távcsővel elsőként Galileo Galilei figyelte meg őket
• Ő figyelte meg a Vénusz fázisait
• A marsi csatornák hírei
• Tudásunk nagy része ezeknek a szondáknak köszönhető
11. A KÜLSŐ BOLYGÓK
• Nagy átmérőjűek
• Gázból állnak: hidrogén, hélium, metán
• Nagy tömegűek
• Kis sűrűségűek
• Gyors a tengelyforgásuk
• Sok holdjuk van
• A külső bolygók: Jupiter, Szaturnusz,
Uránusz, Neptunusz
16. A KÜLSŐ BOLYGÓK
• Galilei 1610-ben felfedezte a négy Galileo-féle
holdat
• Cassini olasz csillagász leírja a Szaturnusz
gyűrűjét
• Sorra fedezik fel a bolygók holdjait
• Az első űrszondák: Pioneerok, Voyagerek,
később a Galileo szonda, valamint a Cassini-
Huygens misszió. A legtöbbet ezeknek a
szondáknak köszönhetjük.
17. EGYÉB
OBIJEKTU-
MOK
A naprendszerben számos egyéb égitest kering a
bolygókon kívül. Néhány közülük a naprendszer
legidősebb képződménye, melyekből a korai időkre
következtethetünk.
• Üstökösök, melyek a bolygók kialakulásának idejéről
mesélnek
• Aszteroidák, hatalmas kődarabok a naprendszer
pereméről
• Kisbolygók, a Mars és a Jupiter közötti övezetből
• Törpebolygók, közéjük sorolták a Plútót, a kilencedik
bolygót.
• A bolygók holdjai, gyűrűi
