The document discusses an urban water cycle workshop for year 3 students. The students discuss in groups how water arrives at homes from rivers, which are cleaned with chlorine at purification plants to make the water fresh. They then use and consume the water, after which the dirty water goes through sewers to be filtered and recycled to clean streets or sent to the sea, no longer as freshwater. The students also see how water dissolves mineral substances and taste different kinds of water to measure mineral concentration, learning that water is essential but limited so they should not waste it.
The document describes observations of the Rio Grande river bed and surrounding areas. It notes that the river bed is empty and the swallow nests are empty under two bridges. However, farther upstream the water looks cleaner than when the river is flowing heavily with mud. The document then reveals that the source of this water is the Las Cruces Sewage Treatment Plant, which discharges 10 to 12 million gallons of treated sewage into the river every day. It further notes the presence of algal growth where the sewage water enters the river. Finally, it states that the EBID will soon begin releasing more water from Caballo Reservoir so that the Rio Grande will start flowing more fully again.
