On the authority of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him),
who said:
"Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what
was intended. Whoever migrates with an intention for Allah and
His messenger, the migration will be for the sake of Allah and his
Messenger. And whoever migrates for worldly gain or to marry a
woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he
migrated for."

4. Islam has been built on five [pillars]:
testifying that there is no god but Allah and that
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,
performing the prayers,
paying the Zakah,
performing pilgrimage to the House,
and fasting in Ramadan.
LESSONS
• Actions are based on intention
• Become a visionary and have high aspirations
• Live a life of purpose
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Who was Umar Ibn Al-Khattab?
• How important is intent in Islam?
• What is the ultimate objective of a believer?
ACTION ITEMS
• Purify your intentions
• Avoid riyaa (doing good deeds for show)

6. LESSONS
• This hadith stresses the fundamental five pillars of Islam
• There is a metaphor being used of a structure supported
by strong pillars
• Using metaphors is a powerful way to educate and convey a
message
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Who is the narrator of the hadith?
• Explain the five pillars in somewhat detail.
• What are the pillars you have brought into practice so far?
• What is the difference between obligatory acts of worship
and optional acts of worship?
• Is it enough to only perform the obligatory acts of worship?
ACTION ITEMS
• Learn about each of the pillars in detail
• Strive to ensure the obligatory acts along with optional acts
are fulfilled

Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
"The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an
and teach it."
3
8. LESSONS
• This hadith emphasises the illustrious virtue of those who
learn the Quran and teach it.
• This includes all sciences related to the Quran from learning
Arabic, Tajweed, the reading of the Quran and the Tafsir of it.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Do you understand the importance of the knowledge that you
are seeking?
• How much of Quran do you read on a regular basis?
ACTION ITEMS
• Learn and practice to read the Quran beautifully
• Strive to listen to the Quran, read the Quran, study the Quran
and teach what you have learned to others
• Honour, respect and value those who have taught you the
Quran as they come under the category of the best of people
as per the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Narrated `Umar bin Abi Salama: (may Allah be pleased with him)
I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon
him) and my hand used to wander around the dish whilst I was
eating. So Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me:
O young boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right
hand, and eat from the dish what is nearest to you." Since then
this has been my manner of eating.
4
10. LESSONS
• This hadith beautifully teaches us the etiquette of eating.
• We must begin eating by mentioning the name of Allah.
• We must eat with our right hand. (This applies so long as
there is no excuse; if a person has an excuse for not eating
and drinking with his right hand, such as sickness or injury
etc., then there is nothing wrong with his eating with his left
hand. )
• Eating from what is directly in front of one. It is Sunnah for a
person to eat from the food that is directly in front of him, and
not reach out to take food that is directly in front of others, or
from the middle of the platter if it’s being shared as a
communal dish.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• What are the eating habits that you currently practice?
• What do you think is impolite when eating with others?
• Do you prefer eating on your own plate or would you prefer
sharing a plate with someone else?
ACTION ITEMS
• Learn as many of the prophetic eating etiquettes and bring
them into practice.

Abd Allah ibn. ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said :
A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): Which
aspect of Islam is the best? He replied: To give food and to greet
those whom you know and those whom you do not know.
5
12. LESSONS
• Spreading peace through the greetings of Salaam is of
paramount importance.
• This includes greeting those whom we know and whom we
don’t know.
• Feeding others is highlighted in a very noble way in many a
teaching of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Is it safe to greet strangers?
• Does this mean that other standard greetings like good
morning etc are not permissible?
• How will feeding others bring about a positive impact?
• Do you know that globally, about 8.9% of the world's
population — approx 690 million people — go to bed on
an empty stomach each night.
ACTION ITEMS
• Learn the different phrases and greetings taught to us by
the Prophet (peace be upon him) and start implementing
them in your conversations whenever possible.
• Try to share your food with your friends, neighbours and
especially the hungry whenever possible.
• Strive to become an ambassador of peace, goodness and
generosity like the Prophet (peace be upon him) wherever
you go.

(Source: Al-Bukhaari)
Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "A believer is not stung
twice (by something) out of one and the same hole."
6
14. LESSONS
• Believers learn from every bad experience.
• No matter how many degrees we have or what kind of
education we received, there are some things that only life
can teach us in the form of lessons that we can only learn in
the school of life.
• Life teaches us that failure is a part of it, and that success can
only come after so many failures. We learn how to move on
from failure and accept it as part of our journey.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Do you own up for your mistakes?
• Is it easy for you to say sorry?
• To err is human, and we don’t have to punish ourselves but do
you learn from your mistakes?
ACTION ITEMS
• Acknowledge your mistakes and take responsibility for them.
Until you can say, “I messed up,” you aren’t really ready to
change.
• Avoid blame games.
• Beating yourself up for your mistakes won’t help you down
the road. It’s important to spend time thinking about how to
do better in the future.
• Make it harder to mess up. Don’t depend on willpower alone to
prevent you from taking an unhealthy shortcut. Increase your
chances of success by making it harder to mess up again.

Narrated Anas (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "None of you will have
faith till he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."
7
16. LESSONS
• This hadith is strongly correlated with the Golden Rule
which is “do as to others what you want to yourself” and
that is to love for your brother or sister what you love for
yourself.
• You don’t want people to backbite you, so don’t backbite
others.
• Inculcate empathy, which is the ability to emotionally
understand what other people feel, see things from their
point of view, and imagine yourself in their place. Essentially,
it is putting yourself in someone else's position and feeling
what they must be feeling.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• The hadith mentions love for your brother, so does that mean
sisters are not included?
• How would the world be if we were all to think this way?
• Would there be hatred, jealousy, and other toxic feelings
towards one another?
ACTION ITEMS
• Walk in the shoes of others.
• Wish good for everyone as much as possible.
• Learn to listen.
• Develop a non-judgmental attitude. When you point a finger
at someone, there are three more pointing back at you.
• Instead of judgment, observe and be curious. Seek more
information.
• Fight judgement with love, empathy, kindness, and
compassion

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand people are
safe, and the believer is the one people trust with their lives and
wealth.”
8
18. LESSONS
• Practice causing no harm to any living being including
yourself.
• Trust is a main and vital building block in human
relationships, and one can
• easily see how a lack of trust can lead to a complete
destruction of any and all relationships.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• How do we tend to hurt someone with our speech?
• Does your word matter to you?
• Can you keep a secret?
ACTION ITEMS
• Try and understand the different ways by which we could be
causing hurt to others intentionally or unintentionally,
through our thoughts, speech, and actions in our day-to-day
life.
• Before you say something, think how you would feel if
someone were to say it to you.
• We can become easily irritated by the reactions of others.
However, each time someone provokes us, we have a chance to
do something different, to tend to our own reactions.

he gives a promise he breaks it, and when he is trusted he
betrays.”
9
20. LESSONS
• The main signs of a hypocrite are three: he lies, breaks
promises and betrays a trust.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Why should you avoid lying?
• The Prophet was known as Al-Ameen (the trustworthy one)
ACTION ITEMS
• Purify your intentions Remind yourself that lying messes up
your life and that for each lie, you will have to utter so many
more lies to cover the initial one up.
• Follow in the footsteps of Al-Ameen (the trustworthy one).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said,
“Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is his leaving that which
does not concern him.”
10
22. LESSONS
• Islam encourages us to leave what does not concern us.
• Minding your own business in today’s culture of nosiness
and gossip is not easy and takes a lot of self-discipline, but
the peace of mind after that is definitely worth the struggle.
• Minding your own business makes you feel lighter and
happier.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Are you an inquisitive person and would you find drawing the
line between being inquisitive and nosy hard?
• Would you like others nosing their way and having opinions
about your life or would you feel invaded?
ACTION ITEMS
• Avoid gossip and assumptions about others. Practice makes
perfect.
• The process of actively guiding your thoughts and actions
back into your lane requires regular practice. So keep working
on it.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Envy consumes good deeds just as fire burns wood. Charity
extinguishes sinful deeds just as water extinguishes fire. Prayer
is the light of the believer and fasting is his shield from the
Hellfire.”
11
24. LESSONS
• Envy is described as a destructive emotion akin to fire.
• Envy will lead you to do destructive things
• Charity counters the toxic feelings of envy
• Prayer serves as a guiding light.
• Fasting serves as a shield that protects.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Have you experienced envy towards someone?
• Are all forms of envy bad?
• Can it be changed into something good?
ACTION ITEMS
• Do you see what you have? Or simply pay attention to what
other people have, achieve or the recognition they get? That’s
how envy and jealousy get into your life. Practice gratitude for
what you have.
• Free yourself from poisonous comparisons
• Looking at others for inspiration is not bad. Emulate rather
than envy

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is reported to have said:
He who has not thanked the people has not thanked Allah.
12
26. LESSONS
• The hadith establishes the importance of showing gratitude
to others by connecting it to the gratitude being rendered
unto Allah.
• Gratitude is humbling, and shows appreciation.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Would you describe yourself as a grateful person.
• By being more grateful, you will begin to see the world in a
more positive light.
ACTION ITEMS
• Make conscious decisions to sincerely thank your parents,
siblings, family and friends around you.
• Use the technology around you to send gratitude messages. It
could make the other person’s day.
• Be grateful and appreciative of everyone who cares about you
and goes out of the way for you. Gratitude might feel harder, or
maybe just less natural, for some of us. The good news is that
research suggests we may be able to actually train ourselves to
become more grateful—and that’s something we can all be
grateful for.

Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
The believer does not insult others, does not curse others, is
not vulgar, and is not shameless.
13
28. LESSONS
• Modesty plays a big role in our Deen.
• A believer does not insult others by calling them names,
humiliating them and hurting their feelings.
• A believer does not swear or curse.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Are you aware of the language that you use?
• Do you call your friends using nicknames?
ACTION ITEMS
• Make a conscious effort to be nice to everybody in your
speech and actions.
• Offer meaningful, realistic compliments. Look for reasons to
build the other people around you up. If they’re doing a great
job, tell them that. If you’re impressed with what they’re doing,
let them know.
• Encourage others and motivate them.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart
will enter Paradise. Someone said, “But a man loves to have
beautiful clothes and shoes.” The Prophet said: Verily, Allah is
beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the
truth and looking down on people.
14
30. LESSONS
• Pride/arrogance is a despised trait.
• It is what pushed the devil to become what he is today.
• Arrogance makes a person feel they need to be perfect
and superior to other people to demonstrate that they
are worthy.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Are you aware of the language that you use?
• Do you call your friends using nicknames?
ACTION ITEMS
• Replace arrogance with humility - a modest or low view
of one’s own importance; humbleness.
• Inculcate the ability to accept that you can be wrong, that
other people will be better than you at some things, that
you are flawed and capable of making mistakes.
• Be willing to hear other people out or use their knowledge
to help get results.
• Admit when you are wrong.
• Spend less time worrying about being right. Let other people
be right. Not every battle is worth fighting. Sometimes you
just have to smile and let things go.
• Be respectful of other people, regardless of their station.

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
A man suffered from thirst while he was walking on a journey.
When he found a well, he climbed down into it and drank from
it. Then he came out and saw a dog lolling its tongue from
thirst and licking the ground. The man said: This dog has
suffered thirst just as I have suffered from it. He climbed down
into the well, filled his shoe with water, and caught it in his
mouth as he climbed up. Then he gave the dog a drink. Allah
appreciated this deed, so he forgave him.
It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for charity
even for the animals?” The Prophet said:
In every being with a moist liver there is a reward for charity.
15
32. LESSONS
• Be kind to every living being.
• Do not underestimate the power and virtue of any
good deed.
• Be helpful and caring whenever and wherever you can.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Do we have to be kind to dogs as well?
• When was the last time you treated an animal kindly?
ACTION ITEMS
• Take an initiative and be kind to animals
• Do not ill-treat them in any form or way.
• Choose cruelty-free products.

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand
is one that gives and the lower hand is one that takes.
16
34. LESSONS
• The hadith establishes the importance of giving.
• We all have wants and needs, but the more you give
the more you have.
• Giving inspires giving. This inspires people who have been
on the receiving end of kindness to pay it forward and give
to others even when they have hardly anything to give.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Giving teaches responsibility. It helps you to prioritise the
needs of others.
• Does giving make a difference? It's easy to be cynical today
and to think that the help that you can offer is negligible,
but it only takes a small gesture of kindness to change
someone else’s life.
• Giving makes you happy and brightens your day. When
was the last time you gave?
ACTION ITEMS
• Give out your mandatory Zakat without fail and as much
Sadaqah as possible.
• Contribute towards making the world a better place.
• When you give Zakat, you pray and intend for the
empowerment of the recipient that the following year,
he/she will become a payer of Zakat instead of remaining
a recipient.
35. Abu Huraira ( may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

36. LESSONS
• Understanding and managing one’s emotions especially
anger is a key component of emotional intelligence.
• Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human
emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns
destructive, it can lead to problems and this is why its
important to keep it at check.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Do you easily lose your temper?
• What happens when you become angry?
• What generally makes you angry? Do you know your
anger triggers?
ACTION ITEMS
• When you feel the onset of anger, say Auoodhu billah and
seek refuge in Allah from the devil - The Prophet is reported
to have said: "If a man gets angry and says, ‘I seek refuge with
Allaah,’ his anger will go away."
• Slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as "relax," "take it
easy." Repeat it to yourself while taking deep breaths.
• Think before you speak - The Prophet is reported to have said:
"If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent."
• Take a timeout - The Prophet is reported to have said: "If any
of you becomes angry and he is standing, let him sit down, so
his anger will go away; if it does not go away, let him lie down."
37. LOVE

38. LESSONS
• Conceal the faults of others.
• Just as you would not like your shortcomings
scandalised and publicised, avoid doing it to others.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Do you enjoy talking about the faults of others?
• Do you gossip or take part in conversations of gossip?
ACTION ITEMS
• Stop focusing on the faults of others. The Prophet is
reported to have said: “One of you sees the speck in his
brother’s eye while he forgets the log in his own eye.”
• Avoid gossip and backbiting like the plague.
• Try to empathise and make excuses for others when
possible.
• Train yourself to have good assumptions about others.
Too often we judge people too quickly, or too subjectively.
• Never underestimate a person’s challenges. Everyone is
struggling. Some are just better at hiding it than others.
• Care. Share. Listen. Love

40. LESSONS
• Be easy-going
• Spread positive vibes.
• Fight hate with love.
• Be united.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Why is unity important?
• Would you describe yourself as an optimistic person
or a pessimistic person?
ACTION ITEMS
• Spend time with positive people. Your circle of friends
have an impact on you.
• Pick your battles wisely and question what really matters.
Do not make mountains out of molehills.
• Know your priorities.
• Take responsibility for your own happiness.
• Forgive one another.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Wealth is not in having many possessions. Rather, true wealth

20
42. LESSONS
• Happiness comes with inner peace, not material goods.
• Contentment has more to do with attitude than place
or things.
• Happiness and contentment can’t be bought with money,
nor does poverty give it.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Would you prefer living in a palace with a broken heart or
living in a hut happy as ever?
• A grateful heart is a contented heart. A contented heart is a
simple heart. And a simple heart leads to a simplified life.
• Gratitude opens the door to simplicity.
• How can we find gratitude in a world that seeks to
destroy it?
ACTION ITEMS
• Intentionally choose gratitude.
• Count your blessings. A new day, a warm bed, a loving family,
hot food, a unique personality, or a special talent. You have
wonderful things in your life. This practice alone has the
