Diabetes Support Services provides monthly support group meetings for those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their families. The meetings feature speakers from the medical community on various diabetes-related topics, as well as activities and education for children. Started in 2007 as My Pal Sticky to support children with diabetes, the group expanded in 2010 to include adults and families and was renamed Diabetes Support Services. The free meetings have helped over 2,500 people over the past three years.

2. My Pal Sticky
Our journey
continues!
October 25, 2007 –
October 28, 2010
3. It was started for the kids …
but then
the
big people
came!!
Actually,
over 2,500
so far!!
4. That was OK
with us … but
we still loved
catering to
the kids!
Sticky was on
hand to help
out!
5. We did fun things like …
bringing in Star Wars
characters for a photo
shoot!
The Cloud City Garrison donated their time and talents
Every kid went home with a photo with them!!
7. There was a bit of
confusion, however …
The “big people” thought
My Pal Sticky
was only for kids … so we
decided it was time to grow us up,
so in September, 2010 …
DIABETES SUPPORT SERVICES
was formed … but
8. Don’t panic …
My Pal Sticky is alive and well …
It just became diabetes support for
kids and their families
under the Diabetes Support Services
umbrella!!
My Pal Sticky
10. Much of what was
started then
continues today
My Pal Sticky members
Have been amazed to have
an opportunity month-after-month
to hear medical professionals
and diabetes specialists (over three dozen!),
ask questions and receive non-judgmental
advice and valuable information on how to
deal with their challenges!
18. Most importantly …
Dave,who has
supported us
by filming every
meeting and
taking pictures
of our
speakers.
Dave has donated door prizes
and has done more than any
other My Pal Sticky volunteer!
How can we express our thanks
to someone so special! Impossible!!
19. Thanks also to all
our volunteers …
to mention a few …
Linda, Elizabeth, Lisa, Bob, Bev,
Rebecca and Pearle!
And to First Presbyterian Church
for opening their doors to us!!!
20. It’s been a busy three years!
We’ve participated in health fairs
put on by churches, schools, A Gift
of Time and the
Oregon Military Department –
Not to be shown up, we held a health
fair of our own!!
21. We held our own
Diabetes Fair
Nearly 500 people came
To learn more about
living with this disease.
They talked to our 25
vendors. We had
speakers throughout
the day. Benaroya
Research and OHSU
tested healthy
members of families
with diabetes to
determine if they carry
the gene that causes
Type one.
22. We conducted meetings just for parents
of diabetic kids …
Thanks, Sara, for all your hard work!
23. We even wrote a book!!!
Mommy,
Please Don’t
Let Them
Stick Me
Any More!!!
24. Remember when
My Pal Sticky
went
GLOBAL?
Here’s 5 year old
Maia from
Johannesburg,
South Africa,
Diagnosed
Type I
September, 2008
25. We have “Walked the Walks”
We raised money for
research, won
recognition and
awards for our efforts
26. And “Walked more Walks”
We served on committees and
helped raise money for
the cure.
27. And, not to forget …
Our founders have
truly walked the walk
here’s …
Al (who celebrated his
48th
year with diabetes
in August) with his
constant companion
and furry continuous
glucose monitor,
Cosie (short for
glucose, of course!).
28. And, when it came to My Pal
Sticky, he had help …
Sandy does all she
can to organize the
meetings and keep
things a-going!
29. Every meeting features a
keynote speaker from the
medical community
And spotlights from
A Fitness Coach
Registered Dietician
Certified Diabetes
Educator
Vendor of Diabetic
Products or Services
Also -- Door Prizes
Refreshments
Goodie Bags for the Kids
We serve Type one and Type two
diabetics of all ages and their
families, the majority of whom
are uninsured or underinsured.
Over 50% of newly diagnosed
diabetics receive no education
whatsoever. Diabetes Support
Services and My Pal Sticky
Fill that void.
30. A separate program for the
children is held while the adults
hear from the speakers.
Sticky entertains and educates
the children in a friendly,
informal atmosphere.
Providing one-on-one
contact with each of them,
she allows them to talk
about their concerns of
living with diabetes
or in a diabetic family.
31. Diabetes Support
Services
meets the fourth Thursday of every month
7:00 p.m.
First Presbyterian Church
