Multiple disabilities refers to a person with more than one disability, such as both a sensory and motor disability. In the United States, it is a special education classification under IDEA for students eligible for services. Not all states use this classification. To qualify in some states, one disability must be an intellectual disability. Those with multiple disabilities typically have more than one significant impairment, such as orthopedic, sensory, behavioral or emotional issues. Students are classified as having multiple disabilities under IDEA when they require services beyond what is available for a single disability.
