Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays or particles to destroy cancer cells by damaging their DNA. It is a common treatment for cancer administered either externally using machines to aim radiation at tumors, or internally by placing radioactive materials in or near tumors. Radiation therapy aims to cure cancer or reduce symptoms by destroying tumor cells while sparing normal tissues, and is delivered as part of a treatment plan developed by a multidisciplinary team to maximize effectiveness and safety.
The document discusses the main types of cancer treatment: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and emerging techniques like targeted therapy and precision medicine. Surgery removes tumors physically, radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells, and chemotherapy uses drugs to stop rapidly dividing cells. Immunotherapy harnesses the immune system to fight cancer, while targeted therapy and precision medicine focus treatment based on genetic factors. The conclusion states that treatments can be tailored to each individual and combined to maximize chances of remission and improved quality of life.
Recent advances in radiation oncology final (1)prasanthkandra
The document discusses recent advances in radiation oncology. It describes how radiation therapy works, the treatment process from simulation to delivery, different radiation techniques including IMRT and proton beam therapy, and types of radiation such as external beam and brachytherapy. It also covers the radiation oncology team, basic principles of fractionation and the four R's of radiobiology, clinical uses of radiation to cure or palliate cancer, and potential acute and late side effects of treatment.
There are many types of cancer treatment that depend on the type and stage of cancer, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, stem cell transplants, and precision medicine. Surgery attempts to remove the entire tumor mass and sometimes lymph nodes, while radiation therapy uses radiation to damage cancer cell DNA. Chemotherapy uses cytotoxic drugs to kill rapidly dividing cells, and can be used with other treatments. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy target specific molecular differences in cancer cells. Hormone therapy slows the growth of cancers that use hormones, and stem cell transplants restore blood-forming stem cells after other treatments destroy them. Precision medicine selects individualized treatments based on the genetics of a patient's cancer.
This document discusses the four main branches of oncology: medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and their roles. Medical oncology focuses on non-surgical cancer treatment using chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies. Surgical oncology performs cancer surgery for diagnosis, staging and treatment. Radiation oncology uses radiation therapy to damage cancer cells while minimizing harm to healthy tissue. Together these branches form the backbone of comprehensive cancer care.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
