Functional foods are foods that provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Japan was the first country to recognize functional foods in 1991 through its FOSHU system. The FSSAI in India issued regulations for functional foods and other products in 2016. Regulations vary between countries but generally classify claims and require scientific evidence to substantiate health claims.
