There is a great amount of low-angled, mid-close ups used in hip hop videos, to imply the artist power and authority over the audience – the low angle gives them dominance as they look down with first person mode of address, being supported by the mid-close ups which connotes the level of high status the character has. This is supported by the mise-en-scene of the videos where artists are shown to be wearing expensive clothing and jewellery.

Two shots are generically conventional in a hip hop video, in 50 Cent’s music video ‘In da club’, a women is standing somewhat irrelevantly next to him connoting how appealing and desired the main artist is, suggesting his higher status and authority. Men have most dominance in hip hop music videos and women are often shown as disposable, interchangeable and as objects of lust which is supporting the regressive ideological discourse of women being lower in society.
- 5. In ‘Speakers Going Hammer by Solja Boy, the white Suburban American present is depicted in ‘black and white’, which signifies the characters as old fashioned. When Solja Boy arrives to the scene, there is a change in colour, and is no longer black and white, inferring the artist and his crew are new and up to date, and in some ways ‘Fresh’. The colour change also conveys a binary opposition, between black and white Americans, whilst also mocking their culture.
