Mendel studied inheritance patterns in pea plants and discovered his laws of inheritance. He found that traits are passed from parents to offspring through discrete units that he called factors, now known as genes. Mendel determined that organisms have two versions of each gene, and only one is expressed in the physical traits, known as the phenotype.
