The city of Arlington,Texas wanted
to design a play space that combined
natural elements with a manufactured
playground.Working with landscape
architects John Fain, ASLA, LEED, AP
and Gary Kutilek, R.L.A. GameTime
designed the right mix of custom play
sculptures and standard PowerScape
playground equipment to create a fun,
unique playscape that complemented
the natural environment.
Our PlayWorx
custom play division
designed a giant tree
with themed slides and ladders, as well
as custom tree, rock and vine climbers
that mimic the look of the natural forest
beyond the playground.We took one
look at that forest and decided there
had to be a way for children to explore
it. By designing a new net tunnel
system, we elevated the play space
and made it possible for
children to venture into the tree canopy.
Thoughtful design is the cornerstone
of every project we develop and it
is the difference between a regular
playground and an extraordinary
play experience. By working with
community leaders and landscape
architects, we were able
to design a signature
destination playground
that is unlike anything
on (or above) Earth.
The one-of-a-kind net tunnel system allows
children to leave the play structure and explore
the tree canopy above the playground.
Thoughtfully designed site lines allow
parents to watch their children play no matter
where their exploration takes them.

EQUALS
GameTime constructed one of the
first commercially available inclusive
playground of its kind in Cleveland,
Tennessee.The ramped design and
ground level activities was a project
of the Cleveland Civitan Club and
served the community and nearby
school for more than 30 years.
As the community grew, and as
ADA guidelines changed, it became
apparent that a new playground was
needed. Once again, the Cleveland
Civitan Club turned to GameTime
to design an inclusive playground
that would provide a safe and fun
environment for children of all abilities.
GameTime designed a playground
with ramps throughout the play
system so that children using mobility
devices could explore the play space
alongside their peers.We added
ground level and accessible, elevated
activities like interactive panels and
musical instruments that encourage
cooperative play.We utilized every
possible space on the playground.
There is an overhead ladder beneath
the Sky Bridge. Beneath the decks
are seats, storefront panels and
more so that no space is wasted.
The result is a playground that
continues to provide inclusive
play opportunities in a community
that has long understood and
embraced the idea that all
children have a right to play.

Based on a roller coaster that was at this site in the
early 1900s,the climbers and slides that connect these
decks are a beautiful reminder of days gone by.
The city of Edmonton wanted a
playground at Borden Park that
was innovative and reflective of the
natural and historic surroundings.
GameTime created three distinctive
play areas that promoted exploration
and discovery for children of all
ages and abilities: a treetop village,
a zoo and a roller coaster.
The zoo includes GFRC sculptured
brown bear climbers and decorative
elements like bee hives and monkeys.
The treetop village features enormous,
exquisitely detailed trees that provide
areas of climbing and exploration.
The centerpiece of the playground
is the roller coaster. Modeled after
a historic coaster from a bygone
era, it features standard climbers
and slides embellished with custom
GFRC elements and roof structures.

Led by Dr.Adam Bright and 45
surgeons from the Florida Orthopedic
Society,the Laurel Park Play and
Fitness Trail is a play destination for
children,and adults,of all ages.
At the head of the trail is a large
playground structure with slides,climbers
and more.Along the trail are fitness and
play pockets designed to encourage
children and families to stop for a moment
of fitness and fun.Supported by Sarasota
County Parks and Recreation and the
Gulf Coast Community Foundation,the
playground and trail were designed by
GameTime and installed by dozens of
volunteers committed to reversing the
trend of childhood obesity.Working
together,the community is taking real
steps to bring families together in a natural
setting and enrich their lives through play.

What was once an eyesore is now a
beautiful NatureGrounds playground
and fitness park.The community of
El Sereno,a suburb of Los Angeles,
worked with city leaders,GameTime,
PlayCore,NRPA and the Trust for
Public Land to create a playspace that
combines a PowerScape play system
with iTrack fitness equipment.Hundreds
of volunteers turned out to help with the
construction of the project and hundreds
more arrived for the groundbreaking
by Mayor Antonio R.Villaraigosa.

CUSTOMPlayscape that Allows
INCLUSIVE PLAY
FOR ALL
When the city of Wauwetosa announced
the development of a custom-themed,
inclusive playground, accessibility
advocate Damian Buchman was
skeptical. After years of visiting
playgrounds with areas of accessibility
that left much of the playscape off
limits to people with disabilities,
Damian was very pleased with a truly
inclusive playground at Hart Park.
“I was thrilled to see it was clearly
universally accessible all the way
to the highest level,” said Buchman.
“Most playgrounds are only
accessible to certain points and
then kids have to stop while their
friends go on, but you can explore
this playground from top to bottom.”
Making a playground that was
fully inclusive that integrated the
community’s geography and heritage
was the result of working with
accomplished landscape architect
Ed Haydin. Haydin and GameTime
created woodland play areas for
preschool and school-aged
children with custom play sculptures
that drew from the area’s history,
including a partially dug out canoe, log
climbers, an eagle’s nest and more.
By working with a landscape
architect who understood the past,
and a community who has a vision
for the future, GameTime created a
playground that is an inclusive oasis
for children and adults of all abilities.

Big Backyard is a model of how
PlayWorx can theme standard
products and turn them into a

We created roofs and barriers from
composite wood boards.The look is
reminiscent of a time when children
gathered spare lumber and built
treehouses and forts by themselves.
We added themed GFRC (glass fiber

AROUNDevery bend is a new play

Martin Park Nature Center is a
beloved park in Oklahoma City.
Families visit the 144 acres of
trails and green spaces to connect
with nature and to interact with
many species of wildlife.
The Center wanted to add its very
first playground, but there were
concerns about compromising the
natural setting. PlayWorx designed
a naturalized play environment
that blended seamlessly with the
surroundings.There is a massive
Treehouse with climbers and tube
slide for 5-12 year old children at
one end of the playground and a
small Fort for 2-5 year olds at the
other end.We included products
from our PlayTrails line like Bee
and Honeycomb Climbers, a
Telescope, a Mushroom Spinner
and steppers.There are informative
signs that provide fun facts
about the wildlife in the park.
The playground was finished with
a combination of engineered
wood fiber and poured in
place rubber surfacing and a
serpentine walking path that leads
to and around the play area.

Play pockets along the trail offer an opportunity
to learn and play in a natural setting and
reconnect families to the great outdoors.

MOVEFORWARD
Fremont, California is known
as a fossil rich area among
paleontological circles.When the
community decided to build a
new playground, they wanted to
integrate their Mesozoic past with
a design that moved play forward.
PlayWorx designed multiple themes
for the park, including a Redwood
Forest and a Saber Tooth Tiger.The
sabertooth tiger is found at
the entrance of the park. At
20 feet wide, 25 feet long
and 11 feet tall, he is a
striking presence, large
enough to walk through
his belly or climb and
scoot down his paw.
The custom 15 foot tall
Redwood Tree is designed
with an internal climber that
takes you from a ground level
entrance to an observation
platform 12 feet above the
playground. At the back,
there is a ramp that links
the tree to traditional
play components like
climbers, steppers, crawl
tunnels and slides.
Central Park, Fremont, CA
This enormous sabertooth tiger is a stunning
entrance to the park.At 25 feet long and 11 feet tall,
it’s one of the largest PlayWorx designs to date.

Northeast Regional Park is a
popular recreation and sports field
complex near Orlando, Florida.
When the park decided to add a
playground, they turned to PlayWorx
to design a nature-themed play
environment that provided fun,
fitness and educational activities.
We started with a beautifully sculpted
Tree and Treehouse design with
climbers and slides.We constructed
pockets of play from our PlayTrails
line with themed play activities
like bees, spiders, mushrooms
and more.We added educational
signage about the animals and
their habitats and installed nature-
themed park amenities like park
benches, bike racks and litter
receptacles that complemented
the design of the playspace.

Workers and soldiers
While in a nearby park, search for an ant colony under a log
or a rock. (If you roll a log or lift a rock, always make sure the
object moves toward you to ensure the space beneath it opens
away from you.) If you happen to discover an ant colony, study
its members from a distance. Can you see any winged drones,
wingless workers, or tiny white eggs and larvae? Watch for
“soldier” behavior among the workers. If an alarm signal is
given, do soldiers rush to the scene?
When you are done looking, be sure to place the log or rock in
its original position.
Citizen Science
Biologists conduct large research studies to catalog how many
different kinds of animals exist regionally or even nationally.
Sometimes they just focus on one particular species. Often
they ask for help because the scope of their research is so
large. “Citizen science” invites individuals to record their
observations about a certain kind of animal on a website. By
doing this, ordinary people contribute important information
to a central database that is analyzed by trained biologists.
There are several ant-based “citizen science” projects your
family can become involved in. The best way to find out about
active ones in your area is to look them up on the Internet or
check them out at www.thedailygreen.com. These projects
often are conducted by natural history museums, nature
centers, and national parks.
Conservation message: Some ant species are
endangered. Others are problematic. For example, non-
native Argentine ants and red fire ants pose serious
problems in the United States. They are a nuisance
around homes, a costly pest to agriculture, and an
ecological threat to native ant species. In addition, red
fire ants can inflict a painful sting.
Safety tip: Ants can sting and bite, so it is best to avoid
touching them.

The city of Cincinnati wanted a
new playground at Washington
Park and they were committed to
creating a play environment that
reflected the community’s rich
history and architectural heritage.
Working with community leaders
to fully understand the history, as
well as the objectives for the new
playspace, PlayWorx crafted a
themed playground with a canal
boat for climbing and exploring, a
tower with an internal spiral slide
and a castle mound fit for all
manner of heroic play.
The exquisite detail of the
sculptures, combined with the
exceptional play value of the
playground equipment, creates
a playground fit for a King in
the heart of the Queen City.

P A S T T I M E
The township of Toms River, NJ is
proud of their sports complexes and
playgrounds, and with good reason.
Some of the region’s best sports
fields and play areas are found in
this oceanfront community. So it only
made sense to combine the two.
PlayWorx combined standard
GameTime product with custom
routed HDPE panels and laser-cut
steel panels and roofs to create a
baseball themed playground.
There are plenty of slides, climbers
bridges and interactive play
events throughout the playground,
as well as ground level activities
and ramps for accessibility. A
custom roller slide gives every
child a chance to slide for home.
By combining standard

to create a unique
play experience
at an affordable
price that

child in the

THE LIGHT
that guides us all is a
LOVE OF PLAY
The City of Frankfort wanted to
share the history of their town with a
playground.Named long ago after a
small fort settlement built by a man
named Frank (hence:Frankfort),
the City’s new playground also
began with a fort.This fort is the
perfect place for young children to
explore and discover play activities
and engage in imaginative play.
There are two working lighthouses
near the playground on Lake Michigan,
so GameTime’s PlayWorx division
created a play space that included
a custom lighthouse structure.
Frankfort is also known for its railroad
car ferry that transported cargo across
Lake Michigan.We designed a ship-
themed play structure that represents
this important part of the city’s history.
A train-themed play structure was
also added for 2-5 year old children.
To complete the playground,we added
swings,a spiral slide and swinging
benches so the adults could sit and
watch the kids play. Built completely
by volunteers,the playground
is the perfect representation of
the people,the history and the
spirit of the town it represents.
