Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film Modern Times follows The Tramp working as a factory worker struggling against the speed of production. He gets stuck in the machinery and thrown in jail, where he accidentally eats cocaine. Upon release, he meets and falls for a poor woman named Gamin. They struggle against poverty and society together, with Gamin at one point wanting to commit suicide. However, The Tramp motivates her that their situation will improve and they dream of a new life. The film comments on the struggles of maintaining one's humanity against the pressures of modern industrialized society.
