This time we will be having something extra, kasi our survey will be all about modern times
contribution. Exciting diba? Alam naman natin that the world population started to boom during
the 19th century onwards which led to more demands for goods na maproduce at a faster rate.
Kaya naman nagkaroon ng unspoken burden or pressure for modern scientists and inventors to
develop easier means to do things in different fields such as food industry, education, and
communication. Kaya naman what are we waiting for? Alamin na natin kung ano ang sabi ng
survey. Team Modern and team Times, let’s play family feud!

TEAM MODERN Ysa: Pasteurization! Ito yung process kung saan hiniheat yung
food/beverages to destroy unwanted bacteria and avoid spoilage. Alam ko this was created kasi
that time spoilage was a major issue as it’s causing economic losses for producers, and the
microbial understanding was then limited. Kaya through pasteurization mas safer ang
consumption and mas napahaba yung shelf life ng goods without altering the taste quality. Yun
lang nabasa ko rin na as much as it kills harmful bacteria, it also eliminates beneficial microbes
such as probiotics na good for the body and it uses too much energy that can impact production
cost and the environment.

TEAM MODERN Chris: Animal vaccination! Ito yung winiweaken yung virus and iniinject sa
body so it can create antibodies to fight future sicknesses. Through this he developed vaccines
for cholera, anthrax, and rabies. during that time kasi, disease outbreaks were rampant. So
Pasteur recognized the need for preventive measures and created this for disease prevention,
public health safety and animal welfare. Yun nga lang, since it was still new that time, it was
costly for larger-scale operations and there’s that risk of emergence ng vaccine-resistant strains.

TEAM MODERN Ysa: Umm.. he saved the french silk industry by solving the epidemic affecting
silkworms during that time. He examined the worms and found out that there’s a different kind of
infection from the leaves. So he recommended practicing hygiene sa farmers and it led to
economic revival.

iimprove yung telegraph. That time kasi telegram is limited lang sa one message at a time, so
he dreamt of sending multiple messages over the same wire at the same time, using speech
kaya may telephone na tayo. It made communication all the more convenient, and it increased
productivity sa mga gumagamit. Kaso lang during that time rin, it was a luxury pa that only rich
people could afford.

for experimental purposes lang ito and doesn’t have practical applications.

recording device natin that uses wax coated cylinder to produce clearer sound. This is in

Nagkaroon kasi siya ng interes sa sounds due to his mother and wife being deaf. Till this day
ginagamit pa rin ito for hearing impairment diagnosis.

TEAM MODERN Chris: *raise hand* Uhm, Blaise Pascal! Actually nagsimula talaga ito sa pag
develop ng Abacus ng mga Chinese na ginagamit to keep track kung magkano na yung mga
binebentang products. Pero dinadagan ni Blaise Pascal ng addition and subtraction para mas
accurate kaya nagkaroon ng Pascaline! Ginawa niya yun to assist his father who was a tax
commissioner that time, para malessen yung workload niya. Convenient and efficient but limited
lang ito since walang mutiplication and division. Not really used that much today.

TEAM MODERN Ysa: Uhm, William Seward Burrough! Siya yung nagkaroon ng first
commercially successful adding machine. His main motivation was his tiring job as a bank clerk
which requires tons of calculations.

TEAM MODERN Chris: Uhm, si Otto Steiger! Siya yung may gawa ng “Millionaire” calculator
kung saan pwede na makapag multiply on top of adding and subtracting! Kaya lang, although
helpful ito due to its efficiency and speed, may disadvantages pa rin kasi big, bulky yung size,
and expensive pa yung mga calculator that time. Today naman outdated na siya.

during that time.

different oil refining techniques and yung low heat method of distillation which could create an
array of unique liquids with varying uses. Isa na nga dito yung paraffin oil, named after its
resemblance to paraffin wax.

TEAM MODERN Chris: si Ignacy Łukasiewicz! Sya yung nakadiscover ng kerosene distillation
from seep oil, nag-invent ng modern kerosene lamp, gumawa ng first modern oil well and
nag-introduce ng first modern street lamp sa Europe. On top of that, he was also the one who
built the world’s first modern oil refinery. Sabi raw initially inoffer nya for sale yung kerosene as
patent for medicine. But when it failed, naisip nya gamitin for lighting uses. As much as helpful
ito for illumination, kerosene had its fair share of environmental and health impacts.
