Editor's Notes
Nutanix
When Google debuted in the late 1990s, the founders did not want to simply adopt the same type of SAN infrastructures utilized by Yahoo!, Alta Vista, and the other Internet companies of that era. Google instead hired a team of scientists from prestigious universities to create an entirely new approach to infrastructure.
These scientists developed Google File System (GFS), MapReduce, and NoSQL, running on hundreds of thousands of commodity servers with local storage — and no SANs. The result was massively parallel computing, exceptional fault tolerance, and linear scalability. As a result, Google rocketed past Yahoo to become the dominant leader in search. Almost all leading web-scale and cloud providers eventually adopted Google’s infrastructure model.
A couple of the developers of GFS, including the lead scientist, then saw an opportunity to bring the advantages of this web-scale architecture to commercial and government enterprises by leveraging the hypervisor. These developers, along with engineers from companies such as Oracle, VMware, Microsoft, and Facebook, spent four years developing the Nutanix Distributed File System.
With Nutanix, compute, flash, and disk are converged in a single appliance. The environment scales linearly, one node at a time. It is highly resilient, very simple to manage, and inexpensive. It can be set up in just thirty minutes.
The Storage Component
Nutanix is managed entirely by the virtualization team from the virtualization console. There is no need for specialized storage expertise — or for any kind of storage administration at all. There are no LUNs to carve or multiple data stores to reconfigure. Since there is no network to contend with in bridging compute and storage, there is also no need for HBAs or zoning.
The Server Component
Nutanix does not have a sophisticated collaboration-enabling GUI like Cisco UCS. But then again, there is no need for collaboration since the virtualization team configures and manages everything. Updates are done in minutes without any downtime, or even the requirement to vMotion.
Purpose of the Slide:
Nutanix delivers the power of web-scale infrastructure to enterprise customers as a turnkey solutions
Main Points:
What Nutanix does is bring the simplicity, agility and rapid scale that web-scale technologies deliver but as a turnkey enterprise solution
Customers can run their diverse application workloads without having to build custom applications
Customers don’t have to learn how to use Cassandra, map-reduce, etc. The Nutanix solution does all that under the hood
Talk about “controlled disruption” – Nutanix is building the bridge for enterprise IT to embrace web-scale IT without completely overhauling the way they do things
