The opening sequence of the film Misery establishes the main character through subtle clues without revealing the horror genre. It shows the character drinking alone and typing, suggesting his personality. Natural lighting, normal costumes, and happy background music make it unclear if this is a horror. The slow pacing and lack of unexpected cuts also don't reveal the genre. This ambiguous opening is unusual compared to other horror films analyzed, more closely resembling The Shining, as the audience does not know who is the villain or victim.

2. titling The titling starts of with the “Metro Goldwyn Mayer” Logo, which then leads into “Columbia pictures” Then followed by the “castle rock entertainment”. It then sets the scene. This is conjunctional for horrors because some of the films I have analysed only title the pictures who supporting them then the cast and production, director etc at the end of the film, or after they have set the scene. Once it has introduced the character of the male it then shows the audience the cast.

3. Opening sequence Starts with a close up on a cigarette, a wine glass and a bottle of champagne, this give the audience the impression of the characters personality. In the background of this there's a non digetic sounds of a typewriter, which again give the audience the impression of the character, because so far the audience have to seen him/her. The audience witness the nolavist celebrating by himself, but also throwing a snowball. The first 2minutes of Misery is all about building the personality of the character for the audience to see. It starts of as a equilibrium which is a common conjunction with horror films which i have seen in at least 3 of the films i have analysed.

4. Non diegectic sound is used allot within the opening of Misery, its used to set the scene and build atmosphere. The music is the background is of a tempo of a frequent beat gives of the impression of happiness. The lighting used in the first few shot, but also thought-out the movie is natural and gives a sense or a normal human being , which doing follow conventions so the audience cant figure out if its a horror or not because so far everything looks and sounds happy. This is also backed up by the costume of the character which is a red shirt and a brown jacket. The cutting rhythm is slow and doesn't show any unexpected rhymes. The genre isn't clear in the first few shots of Misery.

5. The first two minutes of misery is just of the male character in what the audience presume his house writing, and then celebrating by him self. It ends on him going outside to get into his car. So far the audience can not figure out who the villain or victim is, but also why his getting in the car. Misery doesn't follow common conjunctions with the other horror films I analysed, it doesn't make it clear in the opening what the genre of the film is. It most relates the film “The Shining”
