The Miniature Schnauzer is a small breed of dog that originated in Germany in the late 19th century, developed from the Standard Schnauzer or crosses with smaller breeds. They are 11 to 14 inches tall and 10 to 15 pounds for females or 11 to 18 pounds for males, with a wiry coat in black, pepper and salt, black and silver, or white colors. Miniature Schnauzers have a rectangular head, natural forward-folding ears, and are alert, spirited companions that make good watchdogs through barking rather than biting, with a median lifespan of 12 years.
