The document discusses Panasonic's VariCam 3700 and 2700 cameras and P2 workflow solutions. It provides details on the cameras' recording formats and features. It also summarizes test results that showed the VariCam 3700 providing high quality images without extensive post processing. Additionally, it announces new lower cost P2 E Series memory cards that offer shorter lifespans but higher transfer speeds and lower prices than previous P2 cards.

The results of the watershed Camera Assessment Series (CAS) will first be unveiled at the PGA’s inaugural Produced By Conference on June 6, representing a landmark moment in the history of HD camera technology. Spearheaded by ASC Technology Committee Chairman Curtis Clark, ASC Camera Sub-Committee Chairman Dave Stump, ASC Workflow Sub-Committee Chairman Al Barton and Revelations co-founder and PGA member Lori McCreary, the Camera Assessment Series featured teams of PGA members and DPs “road testing” eight of the best cameras available, including top models from Sony, Panavision, Arri and RED. Cameras were put through their paces simultaneously over the course of a weekend on the Universal lot—including setups at “Jaws Lake” and Desperate Housewives’ Wisteria Lane sets—allowing for a true “apples to apples” evaluation.

The perfect combination of high-quality video and a fast workflow, including native editing ability on multiple NLEs, or, in a dailies workflow 2/3” 2.2 megapixel 3-CCD camera offers 4:4:4 RGB dual-link output, simultaneous full-raster 1920 x 1080 recording with 4:2:2 10-bit sampling in AVC-Intra 100 Film-Rec 600% to deliver high dynamic range for movie and TV productions. None of the headaches of ther high-resolution camera solutions No rendering, no de-bayering, no delays! P2 VariCam’s are super high quality cameras that are priced very reasonably – in terms of performance, features and especially reliability.

Continuity, compositing / pre-visualization on the set is needed…just in case the DP got the wrong shot, so, they can do a retake, etc. RED has NO fast workflow and no instant access to HD video content Some customers use P2 Mobiles for on-set HD Assist / video playback from RED's output 720p monitor output (not professional) Eg: We provided 2 P2 Mobile for “Leaves of Grass.” There’s a running post on the CML regarding our P2 Recorders (P2 Mobile and P2 Portable). Here’s a nice posting from Roberto Schaefer. He’s a super high-end ASC DP who shot the latest “James Bond” flick, “Quantum of Solace”. We gave him two P2 Mobiles for a two camera Indy RED flick last summer. This is nice PR. This type of workflow (including severe RED workflow limitations) is also one of the reasons why we’ve been pushing the P2 Mobile as the center of Video Village. “ We used 2 of their mobile P2 decks for an HD video assist system with the RED camera's HD/SDI output. Even though it was only 720p output it worked great. We were doing VFX twinning and eyelines were extremely important for the one actor to reference. The system worked beautifully. We viewed it all on 2 Panasonic 1760 monitors.” R.Schaefer, asc

What are the main differences between the E Series cards and current “A” Series cards? Type of flash memory, card lifetime, transfer speed and price What is technically different that results in a shorter life span? Current P2 cards, including the “A” Series use Single Level Cell (SLC) NAND Flash Memory. The “E” Series of P2 cards use Multi Level Cell (MLC) NAND Flash Memory. In SLC NAND flash memory, each cell holds one bit of data in MLC NAND flash memory, each cell holds two bits of data. While MLC NAND flash memory holds more data and reduces the unit price per byte, it offers fewer overwrites than SLC NAND flash memory does. On the other hand, MLC NAND flash memory costs less.

What is the maximum transfer rate for these P2 cards? 1.2 Gbps. Current A Series P2 cards have a max rate of 800 Mbps. Please note, transfer speeds are based on several factors, including computer and disk / RAID configuration, copy method or application software and potential network traffic. During the P2 E Series card usable life, is it the same quality and reliability as the current “A” or “R” series? Yes. Are the E Series cards compatible with non-linear editing and server solutions? Yes. As always, please contact your non-linear editing or server provider with any specific questions. Are the E Series Cards compatible with all P2 camcorders, recorders and workflow tools? Yes, though, the AJ-PCD35 requires a firmware and driver upgrade.
Are the E Series Cards compatible with all P2 camcorders, recorders and workflow tools? Yes, though, the AJ-PCD35 requires a firmware and driver upgrade. When will the AJ-PCD35 firmware and driver upgrade be available? This software will be released at the same time as the new E Series P2 Card, currently planned for May 2009, with the release of the AJ-P2E016X 16GB and AJ-P2E032X 32GB E Series P2 cards. This upgrade will be available for download at www.panasonic.com/broadcast . Is there a time capacity difference between the E Series and current A series P2 Cards? “ E” Series P2 Cards have the same time capacity as other series of P2 Cards.
Why are these new E Series P2 Cards are still based on a PCMCIA form factor? These new cards still have the PCMCIA form factor to ensure compatibility between all existing P2 Cameras, Recorders and workflow tools, as well as newer P2 products. Even though the form factor is the same, Panasonic continues development on the P2 card platform. For example, the new E Series P2 card achieves a maximum 1.2 Gbps transfer speed, allowing for faster transfer / offload capability of P2 content. Only recently, the A Series p2 card achieved an 800 Mbps transfer speed, again, an increase on previous generation’s of P2 cards. Unlike other disc-based or solid-state recording systems, P2 cards are a high-speed bit bucket, offering high-quality video and incredible flexibility, including: Reliability & Instant access Complete data compatibility in all P2 Camcorders, P2 Recorders, workflow tools P2 cards can store ALL P2 frame rates and formats: HD, SD, DVCPRO HD/50/25 and AVC-Intra 100 / 50 Over 100,000 P2 units in use around the world NLE compatibility with all major NLEs and servers How can I use these cards with new laptops that have Express card adapters Panasonic’s AJ-PCD20 P2 Drive provides IEEE.1394 and USB 2.0 connectivity. Most laptops or computers have one or both of these. Also, the new Panasonic AJ-PCD35 P2 Drive provides super fast connectivity via a PCI-e connector to desktop computers. There are 3rd party adapters available to connect this unit to laptops.
