José Desseno came to Argentina from Morocco in 1902 seeking better economic opportunities and was the maternal grandfather of the author's father. Dora Pomerantz came to Argentina from Russia in 1907 for similar economic reasons. The author's great grandfather's surname changed from Faks to Juaquín when he immigrated to Argentina because he did not speak Spanish, but later changed back when he learned Spanish. Several of the author's cousins and relatives also emigrated to places like the USA and Puerto Rico to improve their economic situations.
