Launched in Elasticsearch version 6.5, cross-cluster replication (CCR) allows you to replicate an index from one Elasticsearch cluster to another. CCR is perfect for a number of use cases including cross data center replication, data locality (multiple copies of data closer to users), and creating a dedicated, centralized analytics cluster populated by multiple source clusters.
OpenStack Swift
Openstack Swift is an object storage system that provides a scalable, distributed storage solution for unstructured data objects. It has features like high availability, eventual consistency, and support for the S3 API. Swift stores data as objects without any file system hierarchy and cannot be mounted or used to store live databases. It uses a ring architecture and separate servers for proxies, accounts, containers, and objects, with replication of data across servers for availability and scalability.

Amazon provides cloud computing services EC2 and S3. EC2 allows on-demand virtual machines, while S3 provides scalable storage. Both charge by usage and have advantages of flexibility but also disadvantages like lack of persistence and termination notice. Testing showed EC2 is reliable but S3 throughput is only achieved with large file transfers. While useful, issues around bandwidth and service terms may limit wider adoption.

In this session, we will use both Amazon CloudWatch and application logs to show you how to build an end-to-end log analytics solution. First, we cover how to configure an Amazon Elaticsearch Service domain and ingest data into it using Amazon Kinesis Firehose, demonstrating how easy it is to transform data with Firehose. We look at best practices for choosing instance types, storage options, shard counts, and index rotations based on the throughput of incoming data and configure a secure analytics environment. We demonstrate how to set up a Kibana dashboard and build custom dashboard widgets. Finally, we dive deep into the Elasticsearch query DSL and review approaches for generating custom, ad-hoc reports.

Building Cloud-Native Applications with Microsoft Windows Azure
Cloud computing is here to stay, and it is never too soon to begin understanding the impact it will have on application architecture. In this talk we will discuss the two most significant architectural mind-shifts, discussing the key patterns changes generally and seeing how these new cloud patterns map naturally into specific programming practices in Windows Azure. Specifically this relates to (a) Azure Roles and Queues and how to combine them using cloud-friendly design
patterns, and (b) the combination of relational data and non-relational data, how to decide among them, and how to combine them. The goal is for mere mortals to build highly reliable applications that scale economically. The concepts discussed in this talk are relevant for developers and architects building systems for the cloud today, or who want to be prepared to move to the cloud in the future.
