Presentatie PCDB overleg Utrecht 28 juni 2016Enno Meijers

This document provides an introduction to using the Scopus database. It describes Scopus as a citation and abstract database containing over 21,000 journals across multiple disciplines. The document outlines how to search Scopus, including using specific search fields and Boolean operators to conduct a structured search on a topic. It also reviews how to analyze and refine search results, view document and author pages, and use additional features like saving articles to a list. The goal is to demonstrate the key functionality and search strategies for finding relevant information on research topics within Scopus.
The Erasmus Data Service Centre provides researchers and students with access to financial and statistical databases through its website to aid in their work. It offers topic-based manuals, example videos, and print screens of inaccessible databases along with tips and tricks to help users search and request data from these databases. Users can also schedule individual appointments or attend workshops for assistance and ask questions via an online form, email, or the library's virtual desk.
The document discusses challenges with digital libraries and semantic support. It notes that human information processing is limited and computers do not understand natural language queries. Semantic support adds metadata to information to help humans and computers work together by giving meaning to data. However, communication between digital libraries remains a challenge. While some projects have created ontologies and cross-concordances, researchers often prefer to add their own tags due to difficulties making comprehensive ontologies for research data content. The literature on these topics is very technical and may not effectively communicate with scholars.

2. Microsoft Academic Search
• Indexeert wetenschappelijke artikelen
– Uitgangspunt: samenwerking met uitgevers en
andere content providers (Elsevier, JSTOR, SSRN,
Springer, e.v.a.)
– Content: 48 miljoen publicaties (11 jan 2013)
• Legt “relationships between and among
subjects, content, and authors”
– 15 domeinen, > 200 subdomeinen
9. Over de inhoud
• Wat is coverage? Van … tot …?
• Zijn bibliografische gegevens correct?
– Daarom geen ontdubbeling?
• Kloppen citatie-links?
• Hoe worden disciplines/domeinen toegekend?
Toegevoegde waarde tov Google Scholar:
• Resultaat 1001 e.v. ook te zien
• Selectie via domeinen kunnen helpen bij
zoeken
10. Hoe zit het dan met de
“relationships between and among
subjects, content, and authors”?
17. Over de visualisaties
• Mooie visualisaties
• Maar als onderliggende gegevens een grote
foutmarge hebben….
18. Conclusie?
• Gebruik niet adviseren aan onze gebruikers
• Wel in de gaten houden: visualisaties zijn
interessant
Editor's Notes
