Microservices, Service Discovery and Registration have been heading towards the peak of inflated expectations on the Gartner Hype cycle for over the last year or so, but there has often been a lack of clarity as to what these are, why are they needed or how to implement them well. Service discovery and registration are key components of most distributed systems and service oriented architectures. In this session we will talk about what, why and how of service registration and discovery in distributed systems in general and OpenStack in particular. We will talk about some of the technologies that address this challenge like Zookeeper, Etcd, Consul, Mesos-DNS, Minuteman, SkyDNS, SmartStack or Eureka. We will also address how these technologies as well as existing OpenStack projects can be used to solve this problem inside OpenStack environments.

Along comes Spinnaker which allows you to easily create custom workflows for testing, building, and deploying your application on Kubernetes. CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation) is an architectural pattern that's talked about much and understood less. The gist of CQRS is that commands in your architecture are made differently than queries. The implication of this is that your entire architecture becomes unidirectional. No more request response models from simple APIs! How the heck do you build something like that? Despite being originally popularized in the .NET world over a decade ago, CQRS is making a comeback as unidirectional UI frameworks like Flux and Redux gain in popularity. If you're going to have a reactive, unidirectional user interface, why not have the same patterns reflected in your entire architecture? The mainstreaming of containerization and microservices is raising a critical question by both developers and operators: how do we debug all this? Debugging microservices applications is a difficult task. The state of the application is spread across multiple microservices, and it is hard to get a holistic view of the state of the application. Currently debugging of microservices is assisted by openTracing, which helps in tracing of a transaction or workflow for post-mortem analysis, and linkerd and itsio which monitor the network to identify latency problems. These tools however, do not allow to monitor and interfere with the application during run time. In this talk, we will describe and demonstrate common debugging techniques and we will introduce Squash, a new tool and methodology.

Just over a year ago (before becoming the full time chair and advocate of QCon London, San Francisco, and New York), my main role was with HPE as the principal architect for a client in the US public sector. The systems we supported were responsible for personnel information, scholarships decisions, and record management. Like so many others, we were also faced with legacy applications, COTS product integrations, polyglot code bases, and often brittle deployments. In an effort to decouple code bases and address some of these issues, we started advocating for a Microservice architecture and trying to distinguish it from the SOA practices of the past. Now, it’s a year later. I have had the incredible opportunity to have access to architects, engineers, and leaders from some of the world’s more respected software companies. These are companies like Uber, Microsoft, Netflix, Apple, Google, Slack, Pinterest, and Etsy. I’ve had the chance to have one-on-one discussions with Chief Architects, developers, and engineers building the apps I most admire and use every day (some leveraging Microservices, some embracing Monoliths, and others falling somewhere in between). Patterns & Practices of Microservices is some of the things I wish I knew before beginning a push towards Microservices just over a year ago. It’s the practices of companies leveraging Microservices, it’s the technology tradeoffs when deciding between Monoliths and Microservices, and it’s the advice I’ve heard in interviewing, podcasting, and iterating on presentations from software giants like Adrian Cockcroft, Matt Ranney, Josh Evans, Martin Thompson, and literally hundreds of other engineers who drop knowledge at QCons around the world.

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second). ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
