An archaeon was isolated from hydrothermal vents at a depth of 1395m and pressure of 200 atm in the Okinawa Trough of the Pacific Ocean that synthesizes an endoglucanase enzyme. This hyperthermostable endoglucanase from Pyrococcus horikoshii could be useful for biopolishing cotton products as it remains active at high temperatures and hydrolyzes celluloses.
