Michelle García Zarate is a Mexican national who was acquitted of murder but convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm in the 2015 shooting of Kate Steinle on a San Francisco pier. The case became a flashpoint in the national debate over immigration policy after it was revealed that García Zarate was a seven-time felon who had been deported from the U.S. five times. The jury determined that the shooting was accidental.
