This team of UMass Dartmouth students has created a mission statement and SMART goals for a project aimed at improving recycling habits in New Bedford, MA through public service announcements. Their goals are to film and release 5 PSAs by Thanksgiving to educate the community on what can and cannot be recycled and how to obtain bins, with the hopes of getting 500 YouTube views and encouraging more recycling. They have begun planning scripts and contacting local groups and stations to participate.

Three single guide RNAs were designed to target the snai2 gene. Transgenic zebrafish lines were also generated using BAC recombineering to visualize vascular development. The CRISPR/Cas9 system was validated and zebrafish embryos were injected to create mutant lines. Founder fish were identified by crossing with wild type fish and genotyping offspring. This research demonstrates that CRISPR can introduce premature stop codons in snai2 and generate stable transgenic lines for studying gene function during vascular development.

Penny spent a month in the Northeast of Brazil working with the organization Plan and the host agency Arcos. The original brief for the placement was to promote the ‘Communicating Children’s Rights’ project, a project run by the children from the local community Cabo. A secondary outcome was to give the children who had taken part in the programme a higher social standing within the municipality of Cabo. If these children, who had learnt so much from the programme, were looked on favourably by the community they would be able to effect change much more successfully.
This appeared on the face of it to be a very straightforward project. Penny thought they would be able to raise awareness of the scheme quite easily and believed it would be as simple as promoting it in the local schools within Cabo. This wasn’t the case. Penny found the placement challenging, but extremely rewarding at the same time. Penny made a tremendous difference to the organisation Plan and to the children involved with the many projects that Plan offers.

- 2. Mission Statement We are a team of students from Umass Dartmouth who would like to make a sustainable impact on recycling habits in New Bedford. We plan to inform the community through public service and radio announcements to promote the do’s and don’ts or recycling in the area.
- 3. SMART Goals To ensure sustainability of the PSA scripts. Film and release 5 PSA’s with New Bedford cable access to be aired before Thanksgiving (November 28th, 2013). Get at least 500 YouTube views collectively of the PSA’s. Get an A as a team. Encourage recycling to those who don’t (Including education on where to get blue bins and what should and should not be in blue bins). Reach English and Spanish speaking residents in New Bedford and surrounding area about importance and benefits of recycling.
