In 2013 we developed these 6 x case studies of people from Newcastle University involved in transport to showcase at British Science Festival. transportNewcastle was an initiative uniting all transport people across the university via different activities. Our 6 people came from different backgrounds and university schools and the idea was to showcase variety of transport-related careers. And so we have transport lecturers (from civil engineering), mechanical engineering student (Formula 1 project) or guys from IT.
All data was collected in 2013, six years later some of them have different jobs.
This activity was developed by a team of Mahidol University undergraduate engineering students. They designed this presentation + 5 x cut out sheets to teach primary school children about rail track ballast. We delivered this activity in Bangkok in November 2018.

We developed these 8 career sheets to showcase people involved in MetroExchange project (UK-TH) and how much of the four specific STEM subjects they use at work. It was approved on 24 October 2018, we took it to primary school and promote it online.
Since then some people changed their jobs and currently work elsewhere. Designed by Anna Fraszczyk.
This activity is aimed at KS3 students and discusses an issue of a freight transport. We follow a journey of an apple from various locations in the world (China, Spain, New Zealand), as it travels to the UK. There are 6 different scenarios to discuss. Students calculate time, cost, CO2 emissions of each journey. They also discuss transport alternatives.
The activity showcases 2 sheets: no 1 - 7 bridges over River Tyne (Newcastle-Gateshead) and no 2 - cut out sheet with different modes of transport. The task is for kids to decide which mode goes on which bridge and why (e.g. family goes on a pedestrian bridge, train goes on a railway bridge not on a road bridge). We can also discuss bridge design principles, etc. We developed this activity with Newcastle University students for the British Science Festival in 2013. Graphics were done by a professional graphic designer.
The ‘Maths Girl Sky Train Ride in Bangkok’ activity, based on ‘Maths Girl Metro Ride’ (2016), was originally designed, written and delivered by Dr Anna Fraszczyk in August 2017. So far the activity was delivered multiple times in primary schools in the UK (Newcastle, London, Cardiff), Poland (Warsaw) and Thailand (Bangkok). The activity is suitable to 7-12 year old students. In addition to the slides, students work on hands-on tasks (e.g. draw a clock or 3D metro sign, calculate ticket price or timetable, discuss different types of metro trains).

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
