  • 14. Questions? John Neal, MS – Multicultural and Diversity Coordinator, Delta College

Editor's Notes

  1. A few years ago a student focus group of AA and Latino male students from Delta were assembled to ask them questions that would help better support those students of color. Through the students feedback, research and collaboration with GRCC, Men of Delta was initiated.
  2. We started in the fall of 2014 with 14 students who were AA and Latino. 6 students voluntarily join us through casual conversations, flyers while 8 students were required to come through the basketball athletic program. We started with 5 mentors now we are down to 4 those Mentors are…….
  3. Mentors were chosen based on who we thought the student could better relate to or what mentor had a greater report with the student
  4. We keep our meetings simple but with a purpose, our agendas consisted of: Greet and Eat – time to catch up and relax before the meeting Resources on Campus and upcoming events Job opportunities on campus Registering for classes, when to apply for scholarships Academic accountability – assessment used to help the student focus on what they were currently doing to progress or hinder their success. We look at what they were doing academically in each class and if there were problems we looked at what could have been done better in given situations Hot topics Discuss Any issues or problems they were dealing with How to conduct yourself when pulled over by the police. What professors expect from you as a student
  5. Students were asked to have professors complete a progress report once per month. Within that progress report we were able to monitor attendance, class participation, etc. Not only did the reports give students constant feedback on how they were doing in the class Progress reports gave students the opportunity to communicate with instructors beyond in class dialogue. Mentors were required to communicate with their mentors once per week via phone, text or email and face to face at least once per month (Mentoring takes place to get to know the students on a deeper level)
  6. We focused our efforts on three areas Student Retention Keeping the student in good academic standing Cumulative GPA We never turned anyone away, students were free to join the group and leave as they pleased From fall 2015 to winter 2016 there was 100% retention
  7. All of our guys are amazing, but there are certain success stories we would like to highlight. Matthew J. Luis S.
  8. In an effort to promote our organizations attentions, marketing asked to highlight one of our students. This is the story of Will Carter who explains in his own words what MOD means to him. Will was a very reserved young man who has really stepped up and become a leader not just in our group but he also a member of Society of Hispanic Leaders as well as Delta employee working in the AV department. You can learn more about Will’s story online on the Multicultural Services webpage under men of delta.
  9. This was the picture marketing used to promote MOD on the main webpage; I’m pleased this picture was used because it shows the diversity within our group
  10. Because we are considered a Delta College organization we are required to complete service projects each year. Old Town Christian Outreach Food Pantry Washington Elementary (Santa’s elfs – pick nice things without overspending) New Student Recruiting Strategies Marketing (posters, flyers) Email Campaign Student Services Fair Talking about program in classrooms (partner with academics) Returning Students Continue in Program Serve as Peer Mentors Local Community Projects Travel Opportunities Leadership Conferences Structure Based and Theme Based Program Academic (first semester) Career Readiness (second semester)
  11. We wanted to introduce campus visits to make our students aware of resources available to them at 4 year institutions so that their transition to those 4 year colleges would not be so intimating Men about change Used Incentive Based Activities – attempt to give the students incentives based on various achievements and goals met throughout the semester
  12. Continued Student Recruitment Email blast, social media and partnering with faculty to promote MOD at the beginning of class lectures. Also counseling and advising team have are strong advocates for MOD and refer students regularly. Returning students Student can complete the program in one year; since we are a two year institution, students who return become peer mentors for the second year. Leadership Conferences Introduce conferences to promote social and professional networking March; Illinois State University Academic Based and Career Based Program Fall- meetings are more academic based (progress reports, etc.) Winter – partnered with career services to create a career readiness workshop to increase the marketability of our students
