Career coach Melva Tate speaks at the University of Alabama PRSSA Chapter meeting
Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Melva Tate, human capital strategist and owner of Tate & Associates
LLC, spoke to the members of the University of Alabama PRSSA Chapter Tuesday, Sept.
27. Tate offered her knowledge and skills in regards to using time effectively and
efficiently – something from which all students could benefit.
Within her company, Tate manages three divisions: Strategic HR Partnerships, Career
Touchdown and Melva Tate Speaks. These firms offer services for consulting in career
development to see organizations and individuals succeed. Her foundation is based off
of “cultivating people and the place they work.”
Tate shared her “secret sauce” to success with UA PRSSA members: It all comes down to
being a leader, and to be a leader, one must learn how to master the art of work-life
balance.
“Leadership is the ability to develop a vision that motivates others to move toward a
common goal,” Tate said.
Tate expressed how important it was to have the ability to say no and with no apology.
In the collaborated section of her book “No Free Press,” she noted how building bold
boundaries equals a better you.
Tate’s S.P.E.E.D. process explains how to successfully hold a leadership role. The steps
include scheduling, planning, using electronics, eliminating and delegating.
Tate wrapped up her presentation by leaving students with an answer to the question,
“If you have already over-involved yourself and a great opportunity comes along that
you can’t say no to, what do you do?”
“Picture life as a plate — something is going to have to fall off the side,” Tate said.
“You’re going to have to make sacrifices.”
