The document provides examples of landscape architecture work by Melissa Martin. It includes conceptual designs for a batik and sewing factory in Ghana and a waterfront park in North Carolina. Process images show early sketches, physical models, and computer models used to develop the designs. The document emphasizes the importance of understanding local culture and environmental considerations. Hand drawings, digital renderings, and construction documents are used to develop and communicate design concepts and solutions.
This architectural portfolio includes projects that variate both in scale and in scope. This latest version features projects from Italy, Spain and Turkey and there is a great emphasis on an integrated design process.
A place that has been in nation's eye but neglected for a very long time, Tinkune. A small step into reimagine this space as a place that creates positive impacts on our guests who visits Nepal, that is also friendly to all its users may it be old or young, abled or disabled. A concept of foot bridge introduced to connect two sides of the road through the park.

Body of work was envisioned or completed in California, thus adhering to sustainability/green building ethos, ecology/environmental consciousness, and adaptable to the breadth of microclimates found in the northern part of the state.

2. Prampram, Ghana: A study of
international design and culture
These images are from a design concept for a Ghanian NGO called
Global Mamas. The intent is to create a site plan concept for a batik
and sewing factory that was cohesive with the local culture while
supporting the mission and values of the organization.
The plan is entirely conceptual as the physical property was
unknown. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the community and
respect for natural resources and the environment.

The design concepts challenges the western idea of a factory site plan by creating outdoor work spaces, breezeways and street orientation
to accommodate the climate and knit the site into the local fabric. Several program elements were added to support the Global Mamas
mission including a day care facility, a public transportation drop-off area, and education pavilion.

5. Sunset Beach is a small coastal town in North Carolina with
a sizable retirement-aged population. The town acquired a
property, forested with mature Live Oaks, on the sound side of
Intercoastal waterway.
The concept for this design is to create a park with areas for
residents and tourists that conserves the natural beauty and
provides flexible-use facilities for individuals, events, and multi-
modal access. The design must also address erosion and storm
surge degradation.

6. Process: Creating a site plan through
modeling
Exploring options through simple paper models was an
important step in the design process. This method allows for
the quick, easy, and inexpensive generation of ideas. It also
helps to visualize the interface of different systems.
7. Models: Computer assisted site

9. Digital Media is a wonderful way
to present designs but it is also
great tool for understanding and
visualizing the character of a
space.

11. Hand drawings and sketches are the
most crucial part of generating ideas
and understand spaces and places.

12. Design Process: Sketchbook
to Construction Documents
Information about existing conditions, values, constraints generates ideas
and simple concepts that are developed into documents and graphics that
communicate clearly.
