The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2. Rules
4 Rounds :
12 questions bounce and pounce
Rapid Fire
12 questions bounce and pounce
Long Visual Connect
3. ROUND 1 : Bounce and Pounce
12 questions
Normal bounce and pounce rules apply.
+10/0 on bounce, +20/-10 on pounce.
4. 1. Identify the blanked out face
Although used on numerous websites
such as Reddit, 9GAG, etc. the source of
these comics has largely been attributed to
4chan in mid-2007.
The first comic was posted to the 4chan
/b/random board in 2008. It was a simple
4-panel strip showing the author's anger
about getting "splashback" while on the
toilet, with the final panel featuring a
zoomed-in face, known as X .
7. 2. Identify the band
XY is a Scottish rock band, formed in 2002 and based in Glasgow.
"Mainly we just liked the way it sounded," says Bob. "We liked the alliteration.“
"He was an incredible figure as well," continues Alex. "His life, or at least the
ending of it, was the catalyst for the complete transformation of the world and
that is what we want our music to be. But I don't want to over-intellectualize the
name thing. Basically a name should just sound good … like music." Paul offered, "I
like the idea that, if we become popular, maybe the words XY will make people
think of the band instead of the historical figure"
10. 3. Identify X
Although X is easily one of the world’s most iconic paintings, its permanent home
is a convent in Milan, Italy. And moving it would be tricky, to say the least. Da
Vinci painted the religious work directly (and fittingly) on the dining hall wall of
the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie back in 1495.
Though X is one of Italy's must-see sites, the convent in which it is located was not
built for big crowds. Only 20 to 25 people are allowed in at a time in visiting blocks
of 15 minutes.
It is recommended visitors book tickets to see X at least two months in advance.
And be sure to dress conservatively, or you may be turned away from the convent.
13. 4. Name of the novel and funda
Wright wanted to prove that a great author could work around such a restriction
and still tell a gripping story.
While vividly describing a wedding scene, Wright manages to avoid the words
“bride,” “ceremony,” and even “wedding” (he calls it “a grand church ritual”). To
explain away the verbosity of the language, he uses a narrator whose poor
command of English and circumlocution even irritates the story’s other characters.
With no one left to promote it and few copies in existence, it faded into obscurity for
a time, but has gradually gained steam over the years and today is something of a
classic, albeit in the “oddity” category, rather than for its literative qualities.
Nevertheless, thanks to its notoriety and scarcity, today a first edition copy, even
one not in that great of shape, tends to cost around $4,000-$5,000.
14. Opening lines of the novel (Chapter 1) :
If Youth, throughout all history, had had a champion to stand up for it; to show a
doubting world that a child can think; and, possibly, do it practically, you wouldn't
constantly run across folks today who claim that "a child don't know anything." A
child's brain starts functioning at birth; and has, amongst its many infant convolutions,
thousands of dormant atoms, into which God has put a mystic possibility for noticing
an adult's act, and figuring out its purport.
17. 5. Identify X
X is a fictional male alter-ego to a famous
singer created in 2010.
"Beginning as an invention of my mind, X
was created with Nick Knight as a
mischievous experiment. After working
together tirelessly and passionately for
years, eating bovine hearts, throwing up on
ourselves, giving birth to an alien nation
and an AK-47, Nick and I began to wonder:
how much exactly can we get away with?
23. 7. Identify the book
• The idea of writing the book was proposed to X by Max Amnan, his
business manager.
• X’s book was transcribed mainly by Rudolf Hess, because X could not type,
was slow with his hand-writing and was a poor speller.
• He initially wanted to call his book “My Long Struggle against Lies,
Stupidity and Cowardice”, however his publisher opted for a shorter title.
• The book was gifted to every newly-wed couple throughout the country.
26. 8. Identify X andY
On 12th September 2012, a British radio manufacturers sent a legal notice to the
makers of a Bollywood movie X for using their trademark “Y baby” in the title
track of the film. Y is also the protagonist’s name, but due to his disability becomes
X.
However, producer admits there is no infringement and they will respond the
notice. "The brand has been presented in a very positive light and we will be
responding to the notice," he added.
29. 9. Identify X
A group of lawyers is reportedly planning a law suit against Harry Potter
producers Warner Bros over apparent similarities between X and CGI-tastic
Chamber of Secrets star Dobby the elf.
In a story so strange it has to be true, legal representatives of X believe they can
prove the bald, floppy-eared, pointy-nosed, bug-eyed creature is based on X.
Similar suggestions have been circulating on the internet in recent months, with the
BBC's children's website CBBC even going so far as to post a poll on the matter. Of
5,500 votes cast, just over 54 per cent agreed that X and Dobby had probably been
separated at birth.
32. 10. Identify X
Early use can be seen in India, as an apotropaic gesture very commonly used by
Gautama Buddha (who was born in Nepal) as Karana Mudra which is
synonymous with expulsion of demons and removal of obstacles like sickness or
negative thoughts.
The apotropaic usage of X can also be seen in Italy and in other Mediterranean
cultures where, when confronted with unfortunate events, or simply when these
events are mentioned, X may be given to ward off bad luck.
Ronnie James Dio was known for popularizing X in heavy metal.
35. 11. Name the painting
Scholars estimate the painting was completed in 1665. The painting is an example
of a type of work called a tronie. Popular in the Dutch Golden Age, tronies were
paintings that focused on the face of a subject with an added element of fantasy or
an exaggeration of expression that differentiates them from portraits.
The girl in this painting is believed to be the painter’s eldest daughter, Maria, who
was about twelve or thirteen years old at the time it was created.
Regarded as the painter’s masterpiece, this canvas is often referred to as the Mona
Lisa of the North or the Dutch Mona Lisa.
38. 12. Identify X
Popularly known as Uncle Pai, Anant Pai was born on September 17, 1929 in
Karkala, Kingdom of Mysore, British India
Trained as an engineer, he moved to journalism and worked for a national
newspaper.
In 1967, Pai left his job and started X in an attempt to teach Indian children about
their cultural heritage, after he watched a quiz contest on Doordarshan where
participants could answer questions on Greek and Roman mythology but were
unable to answer the question: "In the Ramayana, who was Rama's mother?"
64. ROUND 3 : Bounce and Pounce
12 questions
Normal bounce and pounce rules apply.
+10/0 on bounce, +20/-10 on pounce.
65. 13. Identify X
Born Ab’ul Hasan Yamin ud-Din X in 1253 , he was a disciple of Nizamuddin Aulia
of Delhi.
X is regarded as the "father of qawwali" (a devotional music form of the Sufis in
the Indian subcontinent), and introduced the ghazal style of song into India, both
of which still exist widely in India and Pakistan.
X is also credited with the invention of the Sitar and the Tabla, along with the
contribution of Khayal and Tarana styles to Hindustani Classical Music.
X was an expert in many styles of Persian poetry which were developed in
medieval Persia, from Khāqānī's qasidas to Nizami's khamsa.
68. 14. Identify X andY
Similarities between X and the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes created by
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle appear throughout the series.
The series creator has said in an interview that X's character is partly inspired by
Sherlock Holmes. Both characters play instruments (X plays the piano, the guitar and
the harmonica; Holmes, the violin) and take drugs (X is addicted to Y; Holmes uses
cocaine).
In the season 2 finale, X was shot by a crazy man named “Moriarty”. Most notably X
lives in an apartment numbered 221B which is an obvious reference to Sherlock
Holmes’ famous residential address 221B Baker Street.
71. 15. Identify X
Mumbai artist Priyesh Trivedi has recently blown up on the Internet with his
painted comic series, X , in which Trivedi takes the familiar icon of 80's Indian
school-texts and educational charts and re-purposes him in a variety of subverted
images and narratives
It began with one image: last year, Trivedi made a poster of a young boy rolling a
joint with ‘T for Toke’ emblazoned across the top in Devanagari script that
emulated the Barakhadi charts, which would depict a young boy undertaking
various 'good' and 'correct' practices, used in many Indian schools. The image
proved popular, spreading quickly thanks to the internet, and selling a number of
prints.
74. 16.Which prez?
• The Unfinished Portrait is a watercolor of an American President X by
Elizabeth Shoumatoff.
• Shoumatoff was commissioned to paint a portrait of the President and
started her work around noon of 12th of April, 1945. At lunch, X complained
of a headache and subsequently collapsed. The President, who had suffered
a cerebral hemorrhage (stroke), died later that day.
• Shoumatoff never finished the portrait, but she later painted a new, largely
identical one, based on memory. The Unfinished Portrait hangs at X's
retreat, the Little White House, in Warm Springs, Georgia, and its finished
counterpart beside it.
77. 17.What work?
Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights is a 2015 novel by Salman Rushdie.
The novel is set in New York in the near future. It deals with jinns, and recounts the
story of a jinnia princess and her offsprings during the "strangenesses."
When asked about the title, Rushdie said “I just rather loved it. You’ve got two, eight,
twenty-eight – you’ve got another symmetrical number describing that very famous
symmetrical number.”
What famous number (in a different famous work) was Rushdie referring to?
80. 18. Identify the band
• Tim Cook and X announced that the band’s new album would be
automatically gifted to Apple’s over 500 million iTunes users following the
announcement of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but many iTunes
users were not happy with seeing music from the band added to their
iTunes libraries (even for free).
• While iTunes supports a way to “hide” previous purchases, the complaints
and confusion apparently grew loud enough to warrant a dedicated
support site for permanently removing the free album from iTunes
purchase history.
93. 22. Reason? (image on next slide)
Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) is a fountain in the
Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. It represents four major rivers of the four
continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile representing
Africa, the Danube representing Europe, the Ganges representing Asia, and
the Río de la Plata representing the Americas.
Each has animals and plants that further carry forth identification, and each
carries a certain number of allegories and metaphors with it. The Ganges
carries a long oar, representing the river's navigability. The Nile's head is
draped with a loose piece of cloth. Why?
100. 24.The book that connects them
Hitoshi Igarashi : Translated the book into Japanese, and was stabbed to death
on 11 July, 1991 outside his office at Tsukuba University.
Ettore Capriolo : Translated the book into Italian, and was also stabbed in his
apartment in Milan but survived suffering knife wounds on his neck, chest and
hands.
William Nygaard : On 12 April 1989 he was responsible for publishing the
Norwegian edition. On the morning of 11 October 1993, he was shot three times
outside his home in Dagaliveien in Oslo.
Aziz Nesin : At a cultural festival in Sivas, Turkey, the protestors were angered
by the presence of Aziz Nesin, a writer who had translated and published
extracts from the book. The hotel was set alight, and the fire claimed 35 lives.
