Medical Benefits Of Cloning

Editor's Notes

  1. 2. The first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell (love, 1997-2009), made it clear that human beings would soon have to face the p possibility of human cloning, and it has been this idea, far more than the reality of animal cloning, that has caused public anxiety. 3. According to a study done by Mackay & Silburn (2008), the stem cells can be used is to cure genetic disease by cellular repair of tissues affected by the genetic mutation. 4. Genetically engineered embryos may be bought and sold on custom based genome. This is morally unethical to the respect and dignity of all people.
  2. Infertility: The parents’ right to reproductive freedom permits them to make sure that they can have a child but also that he/she is prevented from certain diseases, this can be done by selecting and shaping desirable features and traits in one’s child. Defective Genes: Only the specific gene which has the defect is taken to make a normal clone of it, then it is replaced using the gene targeting method. Gene targeting is the most defined way of altering known genes that may have defects in them. Deadly Diseases: Stem cells that are not mutated can be used to transplant and to restore normal function. Alternatively, the stem cells might be derived from the patient, but be genetically engineered (cloned) before re-implantation (Mackay & Silburn , 2008).
  3. Diminished Sense of Individuality: Cloning is like bringing a child into the world in an unconventional way, and therefore it may be like a manmade thing which may not have the appreciation and awe of human life. “ Gene therapy does not usually alter the "germ line", that is the reproductive cells, so even if gene therapy corrects a problem, the problem can still be inherited by children.” (Mackay-Sim & Silburn, 2008). Deliberate reproduction of undesirable traits- critics have claimed that cloning might be used to reproduce certain traits that might be harmful for the society.
  4. Sharing an identical genome does not prevent twins from being distinct and have unique personal identities, and when we look outside some of the religious contexts the person matters more than how it might have been created. Most of the times the fetus cannot survive the mutation but when it does it is the right of the parent to either take it to full term or to terminate the pregnancy. Even in cloning genetic mutation may happen, and it may depend on the parent to decide if they would want to let the fetus develop or to terminate the process. When we look at the brighter side of transferring traits it would advantageous for the society as when we would be able to bring back people with the genome of the great people of our history like, Einstein, Gandhi, etc
  5. The literature review on this sensitive issue has shown us both good and bad sides of cloning. The main argument that comes across that I think needs more development is that effectiveness and the success of the science that promises us a better future. Although many studies show how and where cloning can be used to modify genes, there is very less evidence of this procedure to be actually beneficial for a human being. For example according to the study done by (Cassidy, 2007) cloning was considered a sin in the United Kingdom and people did not allow research and development to take place. The government did not provide funding for such experiments as they were hazardous to people in terms of their ethics and well being. On the other hand I think experiments should be funded, as cloning can be a revolution in science that might be helpful for predicting and eliminating the chances of even the most deadly diseases like cancer. Understanding the effectiveness of this science is not only important for the purposes of human ethics or safety, I think it is also important so as for us to know how much we can expect from it. For example when a person is diagnosed with diabetes, is it possible to cure not only that person, but also to eliminate the risk of diabetes from his generations to follow. This research will help us understand the strengths and weakness even better that would decrease the margin of error and increase our changes of giving the world a healthier human race.
