Be Christ for Others: Becoming Cultural Mystics - Las Vegas Conference.pdfSr Nancy Usselmann
How can we integrate our faith within a media culture? By becoming mystics! Through theological reflection and critical engagement we can discover the needs of humanity present in the art of pop culture. To become inculturated evangelizers today, we are called to develop our sacramental imaginations by taking a sacred look on what is expressed in the culture about humanity’s longing for the supernatural, for God! Only then can we propose Christ as the ultimate desire of our hearts.
How do we follow Jesus in the media culture? It is about being mystics who see God's grace present in all human longings and desires and so offer the culture a soul. We can be that transformative presence in the world today, if we reflect on our incarnational and sacramental imaginations, letting Christ speak through us for a culture that seeks communion, connection and purpose.

The goal is forming disciples who are engaged and critical users of media to reach people in their whole person - mind, will, heart. It suggests combining spiritual practices with media literacy to form people in Christ within popular culture. The document encourages catechists to consider how they can incorporate these ideas of media mindfulness into their own ministry.

Paulines live and work in and through the media culture. Involving the whole person, mind, will, and heart, we evaluate our own media experience through the media mindfulness methodology.
Living the Good Life in the Digital Markeplace of Ideas sm.pdfSr Nancy Usselmann
As disciples of Christ, we are called to witness to the joy of the Gospel, but that involves awareness of our own digital authenticity as well as listening to the needs of humanity today expressed in and through social media platforms. How we navigate the media ecosystem can affect our pursuit of “the good life” along with our missional outreach to those on the digital existential peripheries. Being authentic and responsible disciples of Christ requires the skill of media mindfulness. This methodology is built on the foundation of critical inquiry, bringing one's values and the virtues into conversation with the media messages. Virtues are acquired habits for the good of our whole selves that lead to happy living. We will discuss the virtues needed to engage creatively and constructively within the digital marketplace and the spiritual support we can give for people to reflect on their digital interactions.
This is Sr Nancy's presentation at NCEA 2022.
Some of history's most amazing people were scientists, mathematicians, and doctors... AND Catholic! Some are even recognized as saints of the Church. At a time when faith and science seem to be at odds, we can help young people discover that in reality faith and reason, Catholicism and science, are more than compatible. This session delves into the Catholics who influenced science and can be the perspective for teaching STEM subjects through a Catholic lens.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

Inspire everyone of good will to assist with prayer, action, and
financial support, so that through these powerful means the
Church may preach the Gospel to all peoples. Amen.
3. Blessed James Alberione
“We should always lead people to paradise, but we have to lead there not those who lived ten
centuries ago, but those who live today. In order to do good today, we have to take the world and the
people as they are today. Stretch forward. Always keep in mind what is wanting in us. There is no
time to congratulate ourselves on the past.”

54. praying for celebrities
1. Ask the students to think of one of their favorite celebrities. It could be an actor, singer, musician, dancer, tv show host, artist, comedian, famous chef… any celebrity they like and admire
2. When we like a celebrity, we might follow their work, or follow them on social media. We might even try to meet them one day at a concert, conference, or convention… or get their picture
if we see them in the street.
3. But have you ever thought about how you can pray for your celebrity?
4. Your favorite celebrity is a real person. A real person with likes and dislikes, with wonderful qualities and faults, with talents and limitations, with personal joys and struggles. Have you ever
noticed or thought about what some of these might be? Have you ever brought these to God for them?
5. Even if you never meet your favorite celebrity, you are connected to them through prayer. You can lift them up to God, and intercede for them.
6. Hand every student a piece of colored paper and a writing utensil. Have each student write down the name of the celebrity that they wish to pray for today. It might be their favorite
celebrity, or maybe it’s a celebrity that God is placing on their heart today for them to pray for.
7. Once the students have chosen a celebrity to pray for, have them write out a prayer for their celebrity. Encourage the students to include an element of thanksgiving (thanking God for the
life, talent, inspiration, etc. of their chosen celebrity) and an element of petition (interceding for a particular need of this celebrity, or a hope that they have for their life, or asking that their
celebrity come closer to God, etc.).
8. After students have written their prayer, provide them some time to pray with it quietly (1-2 minutes of silence). If strapped for time, pray an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be on behalf of
all the celebrities chosen, and encourage the students to pray their written prayer on their own at home.
9. Challenge the students to take up this prayer as a novena: to pray their prayer for their chosen celebrity each day for a 9-day stretch.
