Rotary speeds.Rotary speeds.
The rotary speed depends on the
diameter of the wheel and, in case of
the gears, also on the number of teeth.
The rpm (revolutions per minute) of a
large wheel will be less than a smaller
one.

Velocity ratio (i)Velocity ratio (i)
The relationship between the speeds isThe relationship between the speeds is
inverse to the diameters´ one, that isinverse to the diameters´ one, that is
known asknown as velocity ratiovelocity ratio ..
If the driver wheel is larger than the drivenIf the driver wheel is larger than the driven
one, then i>1 so the transmissionone, then i>1 so the transmission

If the driver wheel is smaller than theIf the driver wheel is smaller than the
driven one, then i<1 so the transmissiondriven one, then i<1 so the transmission
reducesreduces the speed.the speed.

ExampleExample
In this case; the
diameter of the driven
wheel (400mm.) is
twice the diameter of
the driver wheel
(200mm.), so the speed
must be the half.
