NATURE is amazing ... and the more one knows about nature, the more amazing it seems to be. What we know about nature ... our scientific knowledge ... is but a small part of what there is to know. The systems we use to manage society and the economy are so crude compared to the systems that exist in nature. We have an enormous amount to learn. Sadly, man built systems do a modest amount for people and quality of life, but at a huge cost to nature. This needs accounting for!
MDIA p3 FINANCIAL CAPITAL - 150420 - 160606Peter Burgess
MDIA ... Multi Dimension Impact Accounting ... takes into consideration the impact of everything, not just money. MDIA helps to change the decision dynamic so that social and environmental impact is taken into consideration as well as the impact on profit and financial capital. Stakeholders are increasingly aware of the negative externalities that are associated the creation of financial wealth and investors will be well advised to take note.
The characteristics of the economic system have been described using diagrams in many different ways. While many of these diagrams serve to 'make a point' they are mostly difficult if not impossible to use to design a system of metrics that will work and be easy to use. Some of the diagrams are very useful to illuminate an issue ... they need to be complemented by something more logical for easy to use metrics.
WASTE is one of the biggest opportunities for improved performance in the modern SOCIO-ENVIRO-ECONOMIC system. Waste does not have much of a cost in conventional accounting, but the true cost of waste taking into account the impact on the environment, the huge.
The conventional incentives for better performance encourage consumption, but only measure this at the point of sale ... the waste all the way through the product life cycle are ignored.
Cleaning up the processes so that there is no production of waste should be a priority ... a getting consumers not to waste in another thing that needs to be done.
Waste is causing untold pollution on land, in rivers and now also in the oceans. This is not the way man built systems should be functioning, and it must be fixed.

GDP is a Wrong Measure of Performance (140517)Peter Burgess
It is around 50 years since Simon Kuznets and Robert Kennedy were critical of GDP as a meaningful measure of socio-economic performance. This series of slides is a brief presentation about the problems with GDP. Some of these issues are addressed by the MDIA system.

Process is at the center of performance and efficiency. In the past efficiency has been all about lower costs and more profit, but in the future optimization of performance will require equal consideration to be given to impact on society (people) and impact on environment (planet). Making this happen requires significant rethinking of the metrics so that impact is quantified in a similar way that all the money profit transactions are quantified.

SIZE MATTERS 5 ... IMPACTS
A workshop at MIT to link mathematics with the realities of a very complex global integrated socio-enviro-economic system that has been very badly served by money as a metric and a dangerously simplified financial system.
The SUN is the ultimate source of energy for planet earth. All the fossil fuel on earth has its origin in energy from the sun. A huge amount of energy hits the earth every day and nature has evolved to use this energy in a way so that life is sustained. In recent times man built processes are putting the natural equilibrium at risk, and the balance that took millions of years to establish may now be tipping in a way that could mean the end of life as we know it ... a big issue and maybe impossible to address.
Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
