LEVEL
SPECIALIZING
MASTER IN
SPORTS ENGINEERING
Sports engineering is a multidisciplinary science
which requires expertises in different fields:
from materials science to meteorology, from ICT
to biomechanics, from sensors development to
statistics, from nutrition to sports medicine. To
achieve outstanding performance, an athlete
needs the contributes of an entire team, which
must successfully communicate by speaking a
common language.
This document synthetically presents a Specializing
Master Programme centred around the theme
of TECHNOLOGY AND SPORT. The idea of
Politecnico di Torino offering such a postgraduate
programme originates from the awareness of the
skills, in teaching and research, available in our
university in several fields related to sports.
At Politecnico di Torino, the following expertises are
readily available and internationally recognised:
• biometeorology and meteorology for sports
• materials for sportswear and sport-gears
• sports biomechanics
• electromiography, bioengineering of sport and
exercise
• thermo-physiological comfort
• sport performance analysis
• management
Even though sports industry is well-established in
Italy, no other Italian faculty offers courses in Sports
Engineering at any level and the uniqueness of
the course in the Italian panorama is one of the
strategic advantages of the project. Nevertheless,
this 2nd
level SPECIALIZING MASTER IN SPORTS
ENGINEERING, delivered in English, is not only
offered to local graduates and companies’ staff but
it aims to attract people with different backgrounds
to create a new generation of sports technologists
and R&D managers for the European sports industry.
The learning objectives of the 2nd
level Specializing
Master Course are classified in two broad categories:
MATERIALS AND PROCESSES: After successfully
completing the course, the students will be confident
in selecting materials and processes for state-of-the-
art sportswear and sportsgear and they will be able
to identify new needs and develop new products
and services to improve athletes performance and
safety.
PRODUCTS AND SERVICES: The students will
develop their skills for sports performance
analyses. By the end of the course, students will
be able to design data management and sports
analysis systems to support managers, coaches and
athletes with the most advanced training systems
and to improve audiences experience.
The2nd
levelSpecializingMasterinSportsEngineering
will be hosted in the modern campus of Città
Studi in Biella, in a social and environmental contest
favourable for sports practice, with easy access to
skiing areas, lakes, mountain bike and trekking tracks.
By exploiting the collaboration with entrepreneurs
and sports associations, the staff of Città Studi will
contribute to strengthen the interactions between the
Academy and the Industry, making this Specializing
Master a unique experience for the students.
As proof of the multidisciplinary nature of the
proposed Specializing Master, experts from the
following Departments of Politecnico di Torino will
contribute to the initiative:
• DIST - Interuniversity Department of Regional and
Urban Studies and Planning
• DISAT - Department of Applied Science and
Technology
• DIMEAS - Department of Mechanical and
Aerospace Engineering
• DIGEP - Department of Management and
Production Engineering
• DAUIN - Department of Control and Computer
Engineering
• DET - Department of Electronics and
Telecommunications
• DENERG - Energy Department
The activities will be coordinated by a steering
committee composed by:
• Prof. Alessandro PEZZOLI, DIST
• Prof. Ada FERRI, DISAT
• Prof. Cristina BIGNARDI, DIMEAS
• Prof. Marco GAZZONI, DET
Entry requisites and selection criteria, with graduates
in engineering, sports science, health sciences,
physics, mathematics and other technical courses,
will favour the formation of a multidisciplinary group,
ideal for a stimulating and creative study environment
and to foster team work among the participants.
Besides internals, academics from European
Universities, experts from the industry and from
sports international federations will contribute to
lectures and practicals.
Thanks to the campus facilities (sport fields, college,
library, laboratories), laboratories and in-fields
teaching activities will be organized.
