To the Selection Committee,
I am writing to recommend Clea Felien for your teaching position. She taught Critical Studies at
MCAD in 2009, when I was then Chair of Fine Arts. This is a required course within fine arts
that is a hybrid of critical theory and studio practice. Students take it at the sophomore or
junior level, and for most it is the first in-depth exposure to modern and contemporary thought
on critical issues. Although required in fine arts, the course also attracts students from other
disciplines who are looking for the interdisciplinary challenge that it brings.
Clea was very able at managing the complexities of this class. She introduced theory through
lectures, which were refined through course discussion, and then put it into practice through
studio assignments, followed by critiques. She was extremely well prepared, with an exemplary
syllabus with a thoughtful range of readings arranged for optimum learning. She was able to
dispel student apprehension about theory. Said one in a course evaluation, “I was able to learn
theory comfortably and see how to use it in my work. Clea affected a good balance of course
activities and readings on theory. She supplemented the lectures with images and films that
showed the theory in application.” Another student said, “The films shown really helped clarify
the readings.”
Clea has great knowledge of contemporary artists. As someone who writes about
contemporary art, has curated exhibitions, and is an avid researcher, she brings a wealth of
information to the classroom. In their course evaluations, students repeatedly cited this
strength. “She has great suggestions for artists to look at, and had me going in new
directions.” As a practicing artist herself, she also understands the full range of studio practice
that students bring to the course, and can conduct meaningful critiques that both assist the
students in their understanding of the issues and expand the possibilities of their future work.
Though this is only one course, I am sure that the depth and breadth that she brought to it
exemplifies the talents and skills that she brings to all her teaching.
