4. Removable partial denture :
A removable denture that replaces some teeth in
a partially edentulous arch; the removable partial
denture can be readily inserted and removed
from the mouth by the patient.

5. Objective of Prosthodontic Treatment
1. The elimination of oral disease to the greatest
extent possible
2. The preservation of the health and
relationships of the teeth and the health of
oral and paraoral structures
3. The restoration of oral functions that are
comfortable, are aesthetically pleasing, and
do not interfere with the patient's speech.
6. Tooth loss and age
• Tooth loss and age are linked.
Tooth loss ∞ Age
Maxillary teeth are lost before Mandibular teeth
Posterior teeth are lost before Anterior teeth
Mostly, last remaining teeth are Mand anterior
teeth (canines)
7. According to Population Census 2011
104 million elderly
persons (aged 60 years or
above) in India
53 Million
Females
51 Million
Males
By 2026, Its expected to grow by 173 million

9. Consequence of Tooth loss
Anatomic
Tooth lost Stimulus
Alveolar Bone
Resulting to Loss of Ridge volume both
height and width
10. Bone Loss: Mandible > Maxillary
Pronounced: Posterior arch > Anterior
Broader Mandibular arch with constricting
Maxillary arch
Mucosa???
Attached gingiva is replaced with less
keratinized oral mucosa which is more readily
traumatized.
11. Consequence of Tooth loss
Physiologic
Oral Sensory Feedback for Chewing
Periodontal
Mechanoreceptors
Gingiva Mucosa
Periosteum TMJ
Once tooth is lost, all this is also lost, resulting to
less precise muscular guidance during function
Aesthetic Impact >>> Functionally
12. Functional Restoration with Prosthesis
Mastication
Sub division of food
This involves
process of selection
and defragmentation
them smaller
particles.
Selective
manipulation of food
by tongue and
cheeks to sort the
coarse particles and
bring them between
occluding teeth
The size, shape and texture of the particles determine the
threshold of chewing stroke.
This perception decreases with increased edentulousness.

14. Functional Restoration with Prosthesis
Food Reduction/ Masticatory
efficiency
This suggest the ability of a person to reduce food in a
specific time frame.
This depend on the no. of tooth present.
Masticatory efficiency decreases with edentulousness.

17. Current Removable Partial Denture
Use
• Partially edentulous individuals not wearing a
prosthesis were 6 times more likely to have missing
mandibular teeth than missing maxillary teeth. This
might suggest greater difficulty in the use of a
mandibular prosthesis.
• In the maxilla, lack of stability was 7 times more
prevalent than lack of retention.
• In the mandible, lack of stability was 1.8 times more
prevalent than lack of retention
18. Need for Removable Partial Dentures
• The need for partially edentulous management
will be increasing.
– Its more economical than other types of Prosthesis
like Implant supported dentures .
– According to the stats, more people are partially
edentulous than complete edentulous (this is because
of better health and awareness among population)
Oral health care is expected to be a highly sought after and significant component of overall health care.
Even though the people are more aware with oral hygiene, but incidences of complete or partial edentulousness never decreases. Hence the need of prosthesis for the same. With fluoridated water and other oral hygiene means, caries incidences have definitely decreased but this means there are more partial edentulous cases than complete edentulous cases. That means people are now able to retain more teeth than before.
This text describes at to what extend mastication is effected by partial edentulousness and how much help a RPD can be to restore it.
This loss of function and loss of masticatory efficiency with tooth varies from person to person. While treating such patient, its important to check this loss.
