Ecologic Institute is an independent research institute that studies environmental policy and regulation. This document discusses different car labeling schemes in various countries as a policy tool to provide consumers information on fuel efficiency and emissions. It summarizes the key attributes and formats of labels used in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK, Brazil, and the US. It also analyzes the debates around relative versus absolute labeling formats and identifies best practices, such as providing cost information and linking labels to fiscal policies. Evaluation shows car labeling, along with other measures, has helped reduce average new car CO2 emissions in some member states.
