Maui's brothers went fishing without him but did not catch any fish. When Maui joined them, he used his grandmother's jawbone as a fishing hook and caught a gigantic fish. However, his brothers did not perform the proper ritual before cutting up the fish, causing its body parts to form the landscape features of New Zealand's North and South Islands.
