Ancient Athens and Sparta had different economic and social structures. Athens' economy was based on trade and culture, while Sparta focused on agriculture. Both societies valued education but for different purposes - Sparta trained soldiers while Athens educated citizens. Women in both cities stayed at home but Spartan women cared for their children for less time as they entered military training at age 7. Athens and Sparta fought in wars against other Greek city-states and against Persia.
