Archimedes was a Greek mathematician and inventor during the 3rd century BC. He discovered a method for calculating the volume of a sphere and wanted this diagram engraved on his tombstone. He made so much progress in mathematics that nothing new was added for over 18 centuries. Archimedes is renowned for his discoveries of buoyancy and the exponential system for writing large numbers, as well as his formulation of the Law of the Lever.
