Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. Viskoosi (VI,CV)
• Selluloosamuuntokuitu
– Kemiallisesti selluloosaa
• se jalostetaan pitkälle ennen kuin se on
tekstiilikuitu
• Viskoosia löytyy monilla kauppanimillä ja
monenlaisia muunnoksia eri tarkoituksiin
– Esim. ontto viskoosikuitu, vanuteollisuuden
viskoosikuitu
• Kiina, Yhdysvallat, Intia, Indonesia ja Japani
tuottavat 62% maailman
selluloosamuuntokuiduista
3. Valmistus ja käyttö
• Viskoosia valmistetaan puuselluloosasta, jonka raaka-aineena käytetään tavallisesti
– Selluloosakuituja valmistettiin noin 2,8 milj. tonnia vuodessa
• Viskoosin valmistusprosessissa voidaan vaikuttaa siihen, millaista kuitua halutaan:
– Pesun jälkeinen kuosittelu on erityisen tärkeää viskoosille
• viskoosi rypistyy helposti
– ei suositella linkoamista tai rumpukuivausta
– Viskoosin silityslämpötila saa olla korkeintaan 150ºC.
– Paras silitystulos saadaan kostean silitysliinan avulla.
4. ominaisuudet
• Viskoosi on sileää ja kiiltävää
• imee hyvin kosteutta
• johtaa lämpöä
• ei sähköisty
• Viskoosilla on kohtalainen kulutuksenkesto
5. Ympäristöystävällisyys
• Kuiduntuottajien mukaan erittäin
ympäristöystävällinen
• Viskoosin valmistuksella on tiettyjä ympäristö-
ja terveyshaittoja
– käytetään vahvaa lipeää ja rikkihappoa
– Rikkihiili
• erittäin herkästi syttyvä, myös hermomyrkky ja on
aiheuttanut työperäisiä ammattitauteja
– natriumsulfaatti
6. Bambu (Viskoosibambu)
• Selluloosamuuntokuitu
biologisesti hajoava.
• Hengittävyytensä ja mukavuutensa vuoksi bambu sopii
erinomaisesti myös urheilu- ja alusvaatetukseen
• Bambu on erittäin nopeakasvuinen ja satoisa kasvi, eikä tarvitse
erityisiä lannoitteita, torjunta-aineita ja keinotekoista kastelua
• Raaka-aineen ekologisuudesta huolimatta viskoosibambun
valmistuksesta koituu samanlaisia ympäristö- ja terveyshaittoja kuin
muidenkin viskoosien valmistuksesta
7. Polyesteri (PL,PE,PET)
- Trevira cs
• Trevira cs on yksi polyesterin kauppanimistä
• Englantilaiset kemistien J.R Whinfield ja J.T Dickson
kehittivät tekstiilikuiduksi soveltuvan muodon 1940-luvulla
• Polyesteri on maailman eniten tuotettu yksittäinen
tekstiilikuitu
• Kuidun suosio johtuu sen soveltuvuudesta mitä
erilaisimpiin tarkoituksiin
– Voidaan käyttää kaikkina mahdollisina tekstiilirakenteina joko
sellaisenaan tai muihin kuituihin sekoitettuna
– Muunneltavuus ja tehokas tuotanto
• Nykyään suurimpia tuottajamaita ovat mm. Kiina ja muut
Aasian maat sekä Amerikka
• Tuotannon odotetaan edelleen kasvavan
8. Polyesterin valmistusprosessi
• Valmistetaan sulakehruumenetelmällä
• Raaka-aineena mineraaliöljyt (Mineraaliöljy on raakaöljystä tislaamalla
jalostettua öljyä)
• Kuidun lujuuteen vaikuttaa molekyylikoko
– Lyhyempimolekyylisten kuitujen lujuus on alhaisempi
• Jälkikäsittelyllä: lämpökäsittelyllä ja venytyksellä, vaikutetaan kuidun
kiteisyysasteeseen.
• Optiset kirkasteet • Puhdistuvuutta parantavat aineet
• Antis(t)aattiaineet
• Palosuoja-aine
9. Ominaisuudet
• Polyesterin kuituhienoudet voidaan valita käyttötarkoituksen mukaan
– Filamenttikuiduista(ohut yhtäjaksoinen/katkomaton kuitu) valmistetaan kaikkein
hienoimpia mikrokuituja.
– Modifioimalla polyesterikuiduista saadaan erikoiskuituja, mm. erikoislujia, kiharia,
kutistuvia, antistaattisia, nyppyyntymättömiä, profiloituja, palosuojattuja, onttoja sekä
mikrokuituja.
• Sekoitteessa kuidun pituus määräytyy sekoitettavan kuidun pituuden mukaan
• Polyesteri on nk. Keskiraskas kuitu
• Luja kuitu
– Kosteus ei juuri vaikuta lujuuskäyttäytymiseen
• Venyvyys on riippuvainen jälkikäsittelystä (venytys)
• Hankauskesto on hyvä
• Hyvä oikenevuus ja rypistymättömyys
– Hyödynnetään sekoitteena helppohoitoisten tuotteiden varmistuksessa rypistyvistä
kuiduista esim. puuvilla
• Polyesteri pehmenee 230 – 240 asteessa ja sulaa 250 – 260 asteessa.
– Silityslämpötilaksi suositellaan 140-175 astetta
• Polyesteri syttyy vaikeasti, palaa sulaen ja palojäännös on kova, hehkumaton pallo
• Kosteuslisä 0,5% (eli erittäin alhainen)
– Hyvä muoto- ja mittapysyvyys
• Lämmöneristävyys riippuvainen polyesteriin sitoutuneen ilman määrästä
– Modifoiduilla kuiduilla kuten ontoilla ja teksturoiduilla parempi lämmöneristävyys
• Huonoin ominaisuus alhaisesta kosteussisällöstä johtuva staattinen sähköisyys
10. Synteettisten kuitujen
ympäristökysymyksiä:
• Öljyntuotannon ympäristöhaitat ja uusiutumaton raaka-aine
– joskin hyvin vähäinen osa öljystä käytetään tekstiilien raaka-aineisiin.
• Valmistuksessa käytetään erilaisia apu- ja lisäaineita
– Osa niistä on ympäristölle haitallisia, esimerkiksi polyesterin
valmistuksessa käytettävä myrkyllinen metallipohjainen antimoni.
• Valmistus kuluttaa enemmän energiaa kuin puuvillan valmistus
• Tehtaista pääsee ilmaan haihtuvia orgaanisia yhdisteitä ja typen
oksideja.
• Synteettiset kuidut eivät maadu luonnossa
• jalostuksessa tarvitaan vähemmän kemiallisia käsittelyjä kuin
luonnonkuitujen. Esimerkiksi valkaisua ei tarvita.
11. Eri aineiden vaikutus polyesteriin
Aine Vaikutus Polyesteriin
Vesi Ei vaikutusta ominaisuuksiin
Alkalit Väkevätja kuumat alkalit vahingoittavat
Hapot Laimeina ja kylminä ei vaikutusta.
Huoneenlämpöisenä alkavat vahingoittaa
Orgaaniset liuottimet Useimmat eivät vahingoita
valkaisuaineet Eivät vahingoita
väriaineet Värjäys vaikeaa tiiviin rakenteen ja kemiallisen
stabiilisuuden vuoksi.
Voidaan värjätä pienimolekyylisillä dispersioväreillä:
Vaatii olosuhteilta joko korkeaa painetta tai
turvotinaineiden käyttöä
Auringon uv-valo Kestää erinomaisesti
• Home, mikro-orgasmit ja tuhohyönteiset eivät vaurioita polyesteriä
12. Trevira cs
• Hoechstin kehittämä polyesterikuitu
• Kuitu on palamaton ja täyttää SFS-EN ISO 14116:n
Liekinleviämisindeksi 1:n vaatimukset
• Käytetään paljon sisustusmateriaalina
– Sopii esim yleisiin tiloihin
• TREVIRA CS® on saatavana myös bioaktiivisena
– kuituun on lisätty hopeaioneita, joilla on bakteerien
kasvua estävä vaikutus
– Ominaisuus säilyy pesuissa.
13. Käyttömahdollisuudet ja hoito
• käyttömahdollisuudet ovat monipuoliset
– ulkoilu- ja urheiluvaatekankaisiin sekä muihin pukeutumiskankaisiin ja –
neuloksiin
– sisustustekstiileihin ja teknisiin tarkoituksiin, kuten köysiin, nauhoihin ja
purjekankaisiin
– Katkokuituina polyesteriä käytetään vanuihin ja toppauksiin
• Polyesteri on kierrätettävä kuitu: tuotteet voidaan sulattaa ja käyttää
uudestaan
• Polyesterivaatteet tulisi pestä mahdollisimman usein väljässä vedessä
– Mikäli tuotteet pestään väljästi niitä ei tarvitse juurikaan silittää
• Valkoiset tuotteet pestään yleensä 60º C:ssa ja värilliset 40ºC:ssa
• Voi silittää tarvittaessa kostean liinan läpi enintään 150ºC:n lämmöllä
• Polyesterituotteita ei kannata valkaista, sille kuitu saattaa kellastua
• Kemiallinen pesu on sallittua
• Tuotteet voidaan varovasti rumpukuivata.
