WELCOME
Welcome to Goldfish Media Training
and our intensive one-day course.
The ability to perform confidently in front of a
camera is no longer an optional talent for leaders in
any sector.
There are more TV and radio outlets than ever
before and video reporting is now a core skill for all
trained journalists.
Even beyond the formal surroundings of a studio,
the reporter interviewing you is ever more just as likely
to be wielding a smartphone or camera as a
notebook and pen. The web and social media mean
your words are likely to spread fast and far.
We will teach you the methods that well-trained
politicians, business leaders and high profile
spokesmen habitually use to ensure their message is
clear and understood - and give you tools to help you
keep your cool under pressure when your
organisation is in the media spotlight, even when for
the wrong reasons.
We are confident you will find your day with us
effective and challenging, but also fun.
This brochure outlines what you can expect from
your day, explains how to find us, introduces our team
of highly experienced media trainers and offers some
introductory advice which will help you prepare.
We very much look forward to welcoming you.

Your Goldfish Media
training day is designed on
the principle that the best
way of learning is doing,
followed by constructive
feedback.
You will receive voice
training, advice about how
to prepare for interviews,
and tips on the regulations
and behaviour
broadcasters are
expected to follow.
But the focus of the day
will be a series of studio
interviews by our
journalists, on themes
relevant to your
organisation. These will be
recorded and feedback
given immediately
afterwards.
There will be plenty of
opportunities for you to ask
specific questions.
It’s not all work. The
day includes a three-
course lunch.
The recordings of your
interviews, together with
detailed written feedback,
will be provided within
seven days of your visit.

Two contexts

OUR VENUES
Our training locations
have been carefully
selected to offer clients
convenience, state-of-
the-art facilities and a
certain WOW factor.
Our three London
venues are all iconic in
their own way.
They include a world-
famous hub of movie-
making, a studio in the
heart of the Westminster
political bubble and a
fashionable complex in
one of the capital’s
most vibrant and
creative districts near
Tower Bridge.
But we don’t just
want to give clients
flexibility and a
memorable day out. If
you can perform
confidently on camera
here, there are few
places or contexts in
the UK and beyond that
should unnerve you in
your media
appearances in the
years ahead.

HINTS BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
Your goal is to look good
on screen without going
overboard or distracting
from your message. Now is
not the time for that
favourite loud checked
shirt, or multi-coloured
dress. Patterns render
oddly on screen and can
distract attention.
For men, it’s plain suit,
shirt and tie for our
purposes. Keep the tie
bold and simple.
Women can opt for their
usual businesswear too,
but again keep the
colours limited and avoid
complex patterns.
Those with lighter
complexions can choose
bold colours to warm up
skin tone. If your natural
tone is darker, choose
something lighter. Keep
accessories to a
minimum.
Women should
apply make-up
that will enhance
their features
(slightly bolder than
one might wear
day-to-day) and
darker lipstick.

MOVEMENT
In a normal conversation,
particularly when we feel
agitated, embarrassed or
enthusiastic, it is common
to communicate as much
through movement as
through words.
Some fidget without
realising it; others fiddle
with their hair, jewellery or
tie to ‘buy time’ when
cornered; still others blink
rapidly or look away when
nervous.
These natural instincts
have to be curtailed on
screen because the video
camera tends to
exaggerate movements –
and staring at the floor or
ceiling can appear rude or
even shifty.
We all have such habits
or tics, but it can
sometimes help clients to
be aware of theirs before
they arrive.
You may well already be
aware of some, but why
not ask someone you
know well and trust to tell
you just one observable
physical habit you have
when you are talking in a
tense context.
VOICE
Seeing yourself on an
online video or television
screen can be a little
disconcerting if you are
not used to it, but often we
find clients are more
unsettled by how they
sound than how they look.
Voice training is an
essential part of what we
provide and you will learn
a range of simple methods
to lend your voice clarity
and authority.
However confident or
eloquent, we all have
vocal habits which
actually impede
communication.
The most common is a
tendency to fear silence,
answer in haste and talk
too fast, particularly when
under pressure.
This can give a sense
that we are not in control
or trying to dissemble.
Get a friend to ask you
five or six simple questions
about your day.
Concentrate on
answering each question
clearly and accurately in
two sentences at a
measured pace.
A media interview
should be treated as no
more than a particularly
focused conversation.
It’s best to try to forget
the camera, the crew
and the audience.
Our training enables
you to become aware
of how you look and
sound so you can focus
the viewers' attention on
your message - not your
tie or intonation.
You do not need to
do any preparation in
advance, but some
clients have found the
following suggestions
useful.
We all have
such tics but it
can sometimes help
clients to be aware
of theirs before
they arrive
