• In 2000, Cameron Crowe tapped his rock-writer roots to write and
direct Almost Famous, a semi-autobiographical movie about the
experiences of a teenage music journalist who goes on the road with
an emerging band in the early 1970s, to write for The Rolling
Stones. Digging into his most personal memories, Crowe used a
composite of the bands he had known to come up with Stillwater, the
emerging act that welcomes the young journalist into its sphere,
then becomes wary of his intentions.

screening with X members. The band X did not allow movie-makers
to use their songs, however after seeing the movie they decided to
make an exception for Crowe owing to their friendship with him.

computer programmer Col Needham entitled "Those Eyes", about actresses
with beautiful eyes. Others with similar interests soon responded with
additions or different lists of their own. Needham subsequently started a
(male) "Actors List", while Dave Knight began a "Directors List", and Andy
Krieg took over "THE LIST" from Hank Driskill, which would later be
renamed the "Actress List". Both lists had been restricted to people who
were alive and working, but soon retired people were added, so Needham

lists as inclusive as possible.

• X had a long and troubled production history starting production in

• Then, Asif recast Sanjeev Kumar as Kais and resumed production of
the film. Unfortunately, the director K. Asif died on 9 March 1971 at
the age of 47 and the film was once again left incomplete.
• Then assistant director Mohd Mehdi Rizvi completed direction of the
film.
• 15 years later, the film's star Sanjeev Kumar had also died in 1985 at
a young age. Then Asif's widow, Akhtar Asif decided to release the
incomplete film. She sought the help of producer-director-
distributor KC Bokadia. In the few months, they managed to salvage
some usable portions of the incomplete film from three different
studios and pieced them together. This cut-paste incomplete version
was finally released on 27 May 1986.

Kubrick to direct the film. Even though he briefly
considered directing the film, Kubrick turned the

• After the scripting of X was complete in 2006, Y narrated the film to
Shahrukh Khan, who was keen to do the film but later would back out for
unknown reasons. When the deal fell through Y who was in bad shape at
the time, as one of his films were delayed and the other stuck in production,
tried to get a hold of all the top actors, though none of them responded
except for Abraham. Vishal Bhardwaj, Y's friend and producer of the film
recommended Saif Ali Khan though Y had already finalised Abraham.
• The film was made on huge budget and at the time when it sank at the box
office, the director Y fell into depression not expecting the critics to lash at it.
• X has garnered a strong cult following, among Y fans and movie buffs, who
rate it as one of the most abstract stories, which can have multiple
interpretations. The film has seen more positive response from overseas
rather than India, though the audience now views it as a modern
masterpiece, critical reception has still not improved. It is often compared to
the films of Hollywood director David Lynch, who is known for his cult
surrealistic films.

Came" by Robert Browning, whose full text was included in the final
volume's appendix. In the preface to the revised 2003 edition of X, The

• Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name" character is one of the major
inspirations for the protagonist, Roland Deschain. The location names in

Nowadays, X is a comic book series published by Marvel.
• Initially, in 2007 J. J. Abrams was connected to a film adaptation but later
revealed he had removed himself from involvement in the project. On
September 8, 2010, an official announcement was made that the series
would be brought to both the big and the small screens via a trilogy of
feature films and two seasons of a television series to bridge gaps
between the films produced by Ron Howard but negotiations failed.
• In Sony Pictures Entertainment set the film for a release on January 13,
2017 with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey playing the protagonist
and the antagonist respectively.

Ralph first landed on the island, he was seen to take a skinny dip, "a

when he presents the beast, a symbol employed by Y to represent
the innate savagery that all humans have, as a "snake-thing.” which
seems to refer to Satan in The Garden of Eden, as he had disguised
himself as a serpent.
• Published in 1954, X was Y’s first novel. Although it was not a great
success at the time—selling fewer than 3,000 copies in the United
States during 1955 before going out of print—it soon went on to
become a best-seller. It has been adapted to film twice in English, in
1963 by Peter Brook and 1990 by Harry Hook, and once in Filipino
(1976).
• Y won the Man Booker Prize in 1980 and the Nobel Prize in
Literature in 1983.

then a musician whose day job was in book publicity. Through
this, she met many prolific authors. One day while driving one

California. A review of the concert in The Washington Post

• The band took its self-mocking name from the publishing term

performances collectively raised $2 million for charity from
their concerts.
