  1. 1. Hello susty leaders! I’d like to thank you for your attention today. My name is Lindsay Saxby and we are talk about something that we all know a little bit about – and look at it from a marketing perspective- business, govt and civil society – where does that sound familiar??
  2. 2. But lets face it, three way relationships, they can be tricky and messy and really complicated. And when do they every really work?
  3. 3. For the next 5 minutes, I’d like to challenge this idea, and show that in the case of business, govt, and nonprofits ----- - partnerships are necessary to solve some of the biggest problems facing our world today, such as poverty, global warming and AIDS
  4. 4. Bill Gates has said that no program to relieve poverty will succeed if Government, Nonprofits, and the private sector don’t learn to work together effectively. EFFECTIVENESS is the key here, so let’s take a closer look at some of these partnerships, and talk how we can apply the 7 Partnership Principles to make these relationships work.
  5. 5. As future leaders of sustainability, WE are going to have to harness the powerful effect that these partnerships can have to get our message out!! It will be our job to use these principles.
  6. 6.Here’s the problem though, how do you bring together what are at times clashing interests around a common goal – And make it work? I mean, businesses are just in it for the money, right? And all of the government’s red-tape can impossible to work with!
  7. 7. What makes these partnerships work is that - - WHAT IS ONE SECTORS WEAKNESS, is the other sector’s strength. The assets of the one sector are the resources of the other. Lets talk about these dynamics of these partnerships
  8. 8. For example: Non-Profits who work with government agencies are a great example of these partnerships. Nonprofits can advocate in political arenas in ways restricted to government agencies.
  9. 9. When the Public & Private sector come together, the potential for impact on social causes is massive because of the notoriety and resources that Private companies bring to the table. Their values may not always be aligned, but they can find common ground.
  10. 10. Its no secret that NGO’s are notoriously skeptical of the interests of the privatesector – But they might work – together - better if NGO’s acknowledge that businesses are in the business of making money but they like to give some support too.
  11. 11. So…. We understand some of the dynamics at play in these partnerships. Now, Lets look at some examples of effective marketing campaigns that have used the 7 Partnership Principles. 
  12. 12. Let’s start with a classic example of agreeing on common goals. The Just Say No campaign was able to leverage support from multiple sectors because the goal to ‘get kids off drugs’ was something everyone could agree on.  
  13. 13. Secondly, Who takes on what roles and responsibilities? Sometimes……. unlikely participants can have a BIG IMPACT - - - - to get important messages out. This was the case with the NFL and Susan G Komen Foundation.
  14. 14. Mutual Respect. Now, He’s your typical condom-promoting spokesperson but the ‘Condom King’ created a trusting partnership that helped the “SEX INDUSTRY” in Thailand realize that AIDs awareness would actually HELP---- not hurt their businesses.
  15. 15. And where there is trust, compromises can be made. Different sectors will bring different values to the table – The art of Negotiation is key.
  16. 16. And you can’t compromise without open communication. Long-standing partnerships such as UNICEF’s “Tap Water Project” requires continual progress reports and communication with Private sector participants.
  17. 17. To create accountability – the Bill and Melinda Gate foundation established criteria for this program to ensure that homeless families were equipped with VITAL resources in the public and private sector to keep families from returning to homelessness. 
  18. 18. And Finally, a project is only as good as its results. Intentions don’t go far if there isn’t measurable data to support it. Results are about making the case for your cause and showing that it has an impact ----
  19. 19. ---- And Impact is what we are going for. We not only want to MAKE A STATEMENT with our marketing messages, we want to make a “real difference” in the world.  Whether your cause is AIDs, poverty or Climate Change, each and every one of us will need to partner with different sectors to be successful!!!!
  20. 20. So when are we going to use tools????? – these Partnership Principles? WE are going to use them today, tomorrow and everyday there after, so that no resource is lost and every opportunity is gained. Thank you very much
