WORDS
FROM THE
TEAM
In todays world of extremes,
finding the right talent needed to
deliver to promises made, goals
and budgets set, and expected
delivery timelines is such a crucial,
yet often the most challenging
piece of the puzzle. To make things
even more complex the multitude of
way’s to find this crucial talent is
evolving at such a dramatic pace. It
includes tools, techniques and
styles of engagement that are
completely different from many of
the traditional processes and
methods still in play in many New
Zealand and Australian
organisations.
We understand that the talent
supply chain component of any
successful ICT project or major
transformation programme needs
specialist and expert focus in order
that targeted and measurable
outcomes are delivered on time, on
budget and at a level that creates
sustainable growth and success for
each and every customer.
CRAIG MCGRORY
Executive Director
The method we rely on is creating a
suite of services across the entire
talent supply chain landscape that can
be discussed, explored and provided
as an entire talent supply solution or to
augment the current technology stack,
or delivery success you are achieving.
This allows for ‘point in time’ talent
supply decisions to be made based on
business need and investment return.

LEADERS ARE LOOKING
TO EMBRACE AI
Analysts and researchers have studied the impact of
artificial intelligence (AI) on industries and economies,
but few have focused on how AI will impact
leadership.
Have you wondered how AI can impact on your role?
A research from Susan Etlinger, AI analyst with the
Altimeter Group, and Heike Bruch, Professor of
Leadership at the University of St. Gallen saw 800
leaders across the United States and seven European
countries (France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Russia,
Switzerland, UK) to share how they personally plan to
use AI, and their thoughts on how successful
leadership changes as businesses use more AI.
The key findings are presented below:
looking to change their skill emphasis in the
age of AI, allowing them to focus on more
core leadership objectives, such as strategy,
goals, and new market opportunities – all
things that can happen only through human
ingenuity.  This suggests that leaders
recognise that the way in which they approach
their jobs will change, and that they welcome
support in refining their leadership skills.

Investing in people
One of the major findings of the study shows that as
AI becomes more prevalent in a company, motivating
and investing in employees became the top time
investment priority for leaders. These results suggest
that leaders recognise the impact that uniquely
human qualities have on the success of a company.
“I actually think AI will make good leaders less busy
and even more human.”
- Heike Bruch, Professor and Director of the Institute for
Leadership & Human Resources Management at the
University of St. Gallen
Augmenting skills
The results show that nearly half of successful leaders
– namely, those at companies that have seen double-
digit growth – are embracing AI to help with direction-
setting, such as creating a vision or setting a strategy.
In comparison, the results show only around 36% of
low-growth leaders believe the same.
The study also shows that the majority of successful
leaders from high-growth companies are
The race is on
The survey results show that high-growth
companies are not only more than twice as
likely to actively use AI compared to lower
growth companies, but they also have
bigger plans in a much shorter timeframe.
“What’s striking about the research is the
difference between double-digit growth
companies and those with lower growth,” says
Susan Etlinger, Industry analyst with the
Altimeter Group. “What this says to me is that
the more you know, the higher your sense of
urgency is.”

Start small, learn fast and scale
The research findings have shown that AI is
successfully utilised by leaders to invest more time
in humans, while helping them create and execute
new strategies.
Evidence showing that the fastest-growing
companies have invested – and will continue to
invest – in AI also highlights the importance of
ensuring that business, inspired by their
leadership, progress on their AI journey sooner,
rather than later, before they run the risk of losing
their competitive edge to more progressive
companies.
In Microsoft EMEA President Michel van der Bel’s
words: “Start small, but start with intention. This will
help teams build trust, learn from feedback and build
confidence. In a nutshell, this is what will help get your
AI journey off with a strong start.”
As AI becomes more widely used, leaders will invest
more time in:
- motivating and inspiring employees;
- identifying new market opportunities;
- setting the right goals.
Decision makers believe AI will have a
positive impact on leadership
- Among high growth leaders, 66% say
that AI will have a positive impact on
leadership, with 8% saying there has
already been a positive impact
- 64% of lower growth company leaders
expect the same, with 3% saying AI has
already had a positive impact
66%
high-growth leaders believe
AI will have a positive impact
on leadership
Key challenges that leaders see,
related to AI:
- Adapting rapidly to new and changing
market environments (47%)
- Promoting a culture for humans to thrive
off AI (41%)
- Developing ideas for how AI can help add
value to customer solutions (40%)

SHORTAGE
“Australia is predicting an additional 81,000 ICT jobs by 2022, the United Kingdom forecasts an additional
745,000 digital workers by 2018, Europe expects to be short of 500,000 IT specialists by 2020 and the United
States of America estimates there will be over 20 million new technology jobs within two decades.”
The majority of New Zealand’s business leaders (56%) struggle
to find digital talent, according to PwC New Zealand’s 2018 CEO
Survey. Data scientists, Cyber Security architects and
Software Developers are all in high demand around the
country. According to the CEO respondents from the survey, not
only the shortfall in these skills are a risk to business growth, but
also a lack of digitisation and skilled digital workers nationwide.

what is
our role in
this crisis?
Our mission as a thought leader within the ICT industry is to raise the question in an attempt to change
this standard through empowering employers with information, improving access to pathways and
helping you realise the benefits of investing in people’s futures. It is also part of our mission to raise the
level of recruitment to avoid the awkward, and unhelpful interview experiences. The poor behaviour
experienced by candidates (e.g. no acknowledgment of applications, response to queries, bias and
comments to name a few) are often attributed to recruiters and employers. It is our responsibility as
recruiters and employers to ensure we develop, train and support this evolving workforce.
Here are some things we can do to change this situation:
Something we need to ask ourselves
now:  If NZ companies are being short-
sighted and are only willing to employ
experienced people, where are they
going to come from if investment is
not made into the less experienced
employee? This in turn will drive
those employees towards
organisations that are investing in
‘growing their own’.
Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.
- Vernā Myers

Over an extended week from the 21st of March in London, Presto
will interview over 150 pre-selected candidates. The objective is to
recruit for over 30 vital roles that across the IT sector. This will
include developers, scrum masters, project managers, consultants,
testers, business analysts and more. Great IT minds are needed for
several leading technology companies; Presto also represent
nationwide companies, who are looking for software engineers and
Full Stack .net developers - these being particularly hard to find in
Aotearoa.
We spoke to Cherrie Wheeler, Presto’s National Delivery Manager
about this opportunity:
Currently, we are seeking specific skilled
people to join our ecosystem of local
employers in NZ, but we also intend to
build a talent pool for future opportunities,
as Presto has grown 20% last year in our
two branches in New Zealand and the
opportunities keep rising.
In the wider economy, nearly 75,000 people are employed in ICT-related roles. While most IT jobs are
in the main centres, there are opportunities across the whole country. This is because medium to large
businesses and government departments everywhere employ their own IT professionals and support
staff.

  • 2. PAGE 1 WORDS FROM THE TEAM In todays world of extremes, finding the right talent needed to deliver to promises made, goals and budgets set, and expected delivery timelines is such a crucial, yet often the most challenging piece of the puzzle. To make things even more complex the multitude of way’s to find this crucial talent is evolving at such a dramatic pace. It includes tools, techniques and styles of engagement that are completely different from many of the traditional processes and methods still in play in many New Zealand and Australian organisations. We understand that the talent supply chain component of any successful ICT project or major transformation programme needs specialist and expert focus in order that targeted and measurable outcomes are delivered on time, on budget and at a level that creates sustainable growth and success for each and every customer. CRAIG MCGRORY Executive Director The method we rely on is creating a suite of services across the entire talent supply chain landscape that can be discussed, explored and provided as an entire talent supply solution or to augment the current technology stack, or delivery success you are achieving. This allows for ‘point in time’ talent supply decisions to be made based on business need and investment return. Market Insights by
  • 3. LEADERS ARE LOOKING TO EMBRACE AI Analysts and researchers have studied the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on industries and economies, but few have focused on how AI will impact leadership. Have you wondered how AI can impact on your role? A research from Susan Etlinger, AI analyst with the Altimeter Group, and Heike Bruch, Professor of Leadership at the University of St. Gallen saw 800 leaders across the United States and seven European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, UK) to share how they personally plan to use AI, and their thoughts on how successful leadership changes as businesses use more AI. The key findings are presented below: looking to change their skill emphasis in the age of AI, allowing them to focus on more core leadership objectives, such as strategy, goals, and new market opportunities – all things that can happen only through human ingenuity.  This suggests that leaders recognise that the way in which they approach their jobs will change, and that they welcome support in refining their leadership skills. 38% high-growth companies actively implementing AI PAGE 2 Investing in people One of the major findings of the study shows that as AI becomes more prevalent in a company, motivating and investing in employees became the top time investment priority for leaders. These results suggest that leaders recognise the impact that uniquely human qualities have on the success of a company. “I actually think AI will make good leaders less busy and even more human.” - Heike Bruch, Professor and Director of the Institute for Leadership & Human Resources Management at the University of St. Gallen Augmenting skills The results show that nearly half of successful leaders – namely, those at companies that have seen double- digit growth – are embracing AI to help with direction- setting, such as creating a vision or setting a strategy. In comparison, the results show only around 36% of low-growth leaders believe the same. The study also shows that the majority of successful leaders from high-growth companies are The race is on The survey results show that high-growth companies are not only more than twice as likely to actively use AI compared to lower growth companies, but they also have bigger plans in a much shorter timeframe. “What’s striking about the research is the difference between double-digit growth companies and those with lower growth,” says Susan Etlinger, Industry analyst with the Altimeter Group. “What this says to me is that the more you know, the higher your sense of urgency is.” Market Insights by
  • 4. PAGE 3 Start small, learn fast and scale The research findings have shown that AI is successfully utilised by leaders to invest more time in humans, while helping them create and execute new strategies. Evidence showing that the fastest-growing companies have invested – and will continue to invest – in AI also highlights the importance of ensuring that business, inspired by their leadership, progress on their AI journey sooner, rather than later, before they run the risk of losing their competitive edge to more progressive companies. In Microsoft EMEA President Michel van der Bel’s words: “Start small, but start with intention. This will help teams build trust, learn from feedback and build confidence. In a nutshell, this is what will help get your AI journey off with a strong start.” As AI becomes more widely used, leaders will invest more time in: - motivating and inspiring employees; - identifying new market opportunities; - setting the right goals. Decision makers believe AI will have a positive impact on leadership - Among high growth leaders, 66% say that AI will have a positive impact on leadership, with 8% saying there has already been a positive impact - 64% of lower growth company leaders expect the same, with 3% saying AI has already had a positive impact 66% high-growth leaders believe AI will have a positive impact on leadership Key challenges that leaders see, related to AI: - Adapting rapidly to new and changing market environments (47%) - Promoting a culture for humans to thrive off AI (41%) - Developing ideas for how AI can help add value to customer solutions (40%) Source: news.microsoft.com Market Insights by

  • 6. PAGE 5 what is our role in this crisis? Our mission as a thought leader within the ICT industry is to raise the question in an attempt to change this standard through empowering employers with information, improving access to pathways and helping you realise the benefits of investing in people’s futures. It is also part of our mission to raise the level of recruitment to avoid the awkward, and unhelpful interview experiences. The poor behaviour experienced by candidates (e.g. no acknowledgment of applications, response to queries, bias and comments to name a few) are often attributed to recruiters and employers. It is our responsibility as recruiters and employers to ensure we develop, train and support this evolving workforce. Here are some things we can do to change this situation: Something we need to ask ourselves now:  If NZ companies are being short- sighted and are only willing to employ experienced people, where are they going to come from if investment is not made into the less experienced employee? This in turn will drive those employees towards organisations that are investing in ‘growing their own’. Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance. - Vernā Myers CHECK YOUR BIAS COMMUNICATE WITH CANDIDATES GET HELP Presto believes everyone deserves a chance to reach their full potential. We have embarked in a two- week journey to the UK to meet and inspire 150 candidates who are considering to make the move to New Zealand. Our workforce needs to be inclusive, diverse and representative of society across every sector. Market Insights by

The objective is to recruit for over 30 vital roles that across the IT sector. This will include developers, scrum masters, project managers, consultants, testers, business analysts and more. Great IT minds are needed for several leading technology companies; Presto also represent nationwide companies, who are looking for software engineers and Full Stack .net developers - these being particularly hard to find in Aotearoa. We spoke to Cherrie Wheeler, Presto’s National Delivery Manager about this opportunity: Currently, we are seeking specific skilled people to join our ecosystem of local employers in NZ, but we also intend to build a talent pool for future opportunities, as Presto has grown 20% last year in our two branches in New Zealand and the opportunities keep rising. In the wider economy, nearly 75,000 people are employed in ICT-related roles. While most IT jobs are in the main centres, there are opportunities across the whole country.
