Bangladesh's ready-made garments (RMG) sector has grown significantly over the past few decades to become the country's largest export industry. Exports have increased from $6.9 billion in 2005 to $19.2 billion in 2011 and are projected to reach $36 billion by 2020. The sector benefits from low production costs in Bangladesh and duty-free access to major markets in the EU, Canada, and Japan. While recent industrial accidents and political unrest posed challenges, the RMG industry has demonstrated resilience with continued export growth in 2013 and 2014. Further expansion is expected as Bangladesh works to strengthen compliance and regain trade preferences through agreements like the US TICFA.
