Mario Molina was a Mexican chemist who discovered that man-made chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were damaging the ozone layer. He was born in 1943 in Mexico City and died at age 70. Molina published findings in 1978 with Sherwood Rowland showing that CFCs were depleting the ozone layer. For this pioneering environmental work, Molina received numerous honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
