Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday that marks the beginning of Lent. It has the same religious origins and meaning as Shrove Tuesday. On Mardi Gras, Christians would eat rich foods like crepes and cakes before fasting during Lent. Carnaval is related to Mardi Gras and comes from the Italian phrase "carne vale" meaning goodbye to flesh, as it is also celebrated on the day before Ash Wednesday with costumes, makeup and food.
