Access to improved water sources has increased globally but disparities remain. In 2004, 83% of the world's population had access to improved water sources, up from 76% in 1990. However, access rates varied significantly between regions, from 99% in Latin America and the Caribbean to just 61% in sub-Saharan Africa.
