Mali has a population with high fertility and low agricultural production leading to widespread poverty. It emerged against the backdrop of declining leadership in Ghana but grew a productive agriculture. Located in Africa surrounded by important cities and the Senegal River, Mali had an economy based on agriculture but remained one of the poorest countries. Mansa Musa ruled from 1312-1337 and commissioned impressive buildings that immortalized him in Arab writings.
